Counting Raindrops (x10)
The darkening sky has a strange way of lifting my spirits. The clouds gather above, and without warning they release their tears. Perhaps it's comfortable to find that the weather somehow reflects how I feel on the inside. I'm just too much of a coward to do as it does. So as I watch, I imagine the sky's tears to be my own. But that fleeting moment of nostalgia sometimes lasts too long. I am unable to shake it off as the sky begins to flash with lightening. Thunder cracks overhead and around me and suddenly I am seven again. Then three. Then five. The ripples across the surface of puddles are reminiscent of footsteps from long ago.
A droplet struggles to drip down the glass, its path obstructed and often diverted by the wind or other drops of rain. I try to follow its uncharted itinerary with my finger pressed against the window, sometimes begging it to go this way instead of that. But safe passage is granted to only a fortunate few. I begin to collect myself as the rain eventually eases down. It promises to be back again, and I promise to welcome it like every time before. Having cleansed my perspective, for me it leaves behind a cool and crisp breeze, and the air is again filled with the fresh scent of earth.
