"3 YEARS For Making COINS," Vancouver Sun. July 31, 1934. Page 3. --- COUNTERFEITING AN ATTACK ON GOV'T, SAYS MAGISTRATE ---- Forbes McGregor, admitted counterfeiter, was sentenced to three years in New Westminster penitentiary by Magistrate McKay in Vancouver City Police Court this morning.
"This is a most serious offense," said the magistrate, in passing sentence. "It is so serious, in fact, that parliament in framing the law fixed the maximum penalty at life imprisonment. Your action in tampering with the currency is really in the nature of an attack on the Government and the country."
"I didn't think of that," responded McGregor.
"Well," continued the magistrate, "I'll give you a little time to think it over. You will serve three years in the penitentiary, with hard labor."
Before sentence was passed, Detective Corporal R. S. S. Wilson of the R.C.M.P. who made the arrest. stated that while the accused had not been charged with uttering bogus coins, but possession of counterfeit moulds, the police had evidence that some coins of McGregor's "mint" had been circulated in Vancouver.
In accordance with law, Magistrate McKay ordered that the moulds and bogus quarters found in McGregor's room be sent to the Minister of Finance for destruction.
