in which youâre a rising music star who navigates playful tension with actor drew starkey, and your flirtation turns into something deeper amid a viral music video and your grammy win.
content: diff style writing, drew being cute n following readers lead for the mv
authors note: will lowkey write a part 2 and/or the music video version of this if requested but idk, hopefully it was kinda understandable!! i just wanted the pov as if u were watching the yt video for the behind the scenes footage omg
youâve known of drew starkeyâhow could you not? heâs a rising star, a name that keeps getting bigger, a face thatâs starting to dominate everyoneâs celebrity crush list whenever you scroll through tiktok. the kind of guy that gets cast in fan-favorite shows, whose off-screen personality makes people love him even more. charming, funny, effortlessly likable. heâs everywhere.
but what you couldnât have imagined is that he knew of you first.
it started small, almost too subtle to notice. a clip of him in an interview, sitting back in his chair, nodding as he listens to a question before casually mentioning that he had just discovered a new artist, you, and couldnât stop listening. he called your music addictive, something about the way you write lyrics just clicked with him. maybe it wouldâve gone unnoticed if he hadnât mentioned it again.
a month later, another interview, another confession. a different setting, a different outfit, but the same topic. only this time, the interviewer caught onto it.
âseems like youâre a fan.â
drew, red in the face, grinning but flustered, just said, âyeah. yeah, i am.â
he didnât say much else, but he didnât have to. the internet picked up on the pattern. his name was suddenly linked to yours, your fans and his fans overlapping, people tweeting at you to collab when?, digging through every interview and live stream to see if heâd mention you again. edits of him set to your songs started appearing on every social media feed. some even made it look like you were the leads in some slow-burn romance movie, just from your music videos and his show clips.
and you? you didnât think much of it. it was flattering, sure. entertaining, even. but youâd never spoken, never met, never had a reason to. it was just one of those internet things, something people liked to fantasize about but wasnât real.
until about a year ago.
red carpet event, flashing cameras, voices shouting your name. you were mid-step, smiling for a picture when an interviewer stopped you, microphone extended.
âif you win tonight, whoâs getting the first thank-you?â
you barely thought about it. âoh, obviously. my parents, my team, everyone who worked on the album . . .â a pause, a flicker of mischief as the words slipped out. âand drew starkey!â
then you scurried off, leaving the interviewer blinking after you. you didnât look back, but you knew exactly what youâd just done. by the time you got home, twitter had already lost its mind.
so with all that history, all those years of almosts, how could you not end 2024 and start 2025 with a steamy, intimate music video starring your one and only secret admirer?
the behind-the-scenes video you upload to youtube starts with a simple title cardâbts: filming my new music video with baeâbefore fading into a clip of you on set, bundled up in a puffer jacket, arms wide as you greet drew with an easy, âhi!â
itâs the first time meeting him in person. youâve known of him, obviously, but standing here now, seeing the way his face lights up at the sight of you, itâs different. the camera catches his initial reaction. he smiles wide, like heâs trying to keep himself from grinning too hard, nodding like heâs trying to play it cool. you hug, brief but natural, before the video cuts to your interview.
youâre curled up in your seat, dressed down in sweats, looking entirely comfortable in front of the camera like youâve done this a hundred times before. one leg is crossed over the other, your head rests against your palm, and the other hand is tucked between your thighs, playing absentmindedly with the fabric of your hoodie. youâre practically beaming as you talk.
âheâs cute. but no, getting drew to agree to the video was no problem,â you admit, a small laugh slipping through. âit just made sense. everybody on twitter and everybody on tiktok can calm down now.â
you grin at the camera before adding, âplus, my mom loved his last movie.â
your friend behind the camera immediately jumps in, amused. âdid she?â
you snicker, nodding your head like the answer is obvious. you donât even need to say anything. your smile says it all.
cut to: on set at night.
you stand close to drew, explaining your vision, the two of you tucked into a quiet corner of the closed-off street. itâs late. youâre talking, hands moving as you try to get the words out just right, and drew listens intently, nodding along, before huffing out a laugh at something you say.
the next shot is of you in position, standing just outside the entrance of a nightclub. the scene is meant to be electric, with the music pounding inside, the city buzzing around you. you refilm the shot a few times, stepping out of the alleyway and onto the sidewalk, pausing just as drew and âhis group of friendsâ step onto the curb from their car. the camera zooms in on your expression, catching the exact moment your character notices him.
you give him a look, one of intrigue, curiosity, a silent pull that makes drewâs character do a double take as he follows his friends inside. but as you turn and walk away, he hesitates. his friends donât notice, but the audience is supposed to.
although the music is supposed to cut through, theyâll be able to see him say the words, âwait up for me, iâll catch up.â
he stays behind. he follows you.
the cameras catch him walking past the frame, but in the behind-the-scenes footage, youâre already waiting for him off-camera. youâre standing just around the corner, out of sight, and the second heâs done with his take, he breaks into a grin, beaming as he jogs over to you.
âwas that good?â he asks, a little breathless, still caught in the rush of the scene.
and off-camera, you laugh.
the next shot starts with a handheld camera capturing you inside a dimly lit bar, the neon glow from the signs reflecting off the polished counter. youâre perched on a stool, fingers curled around a glass, not drinking, just holding it for the scene, your expression unreadable as the camera focuses on you. the shot lasts for only a moment before it abruptly cuts away.
to: drewâs micro interview.
heâs leaned back in his chair, relaxed, but thereâs a knowing glint in his eyes, something playful lurking beneath his words. âshe made me flustered super easily, yeah,â he confesses, mouth curving into a smirk as he glances off-camera toward your friend conducting the interviews. âshe just has that effect to her.â
to: the first night scene.
this time, the energy is entirely different. the camera moves with purpose, following drew as he catches up to you, his hand grasping your arm, tugging you into another alleyway. the moment is fast, urgent, his body pressing yours up against the cool brick wall, his lips finding yours without hesitation.
the camera doesnât linger on the kiss itself. instead, it captures the details, like the way drewâs fingers tighten around the fabric of your clothes, the way your hand slips into the back of his hair, curling at the nape of his neck. the shot pans downward, exposing the closeness between your bodies, the breathlessness of it all, before the scene suddenly fades.
youâre sitting up straighter this time in your interview immediately after the clip, legs crossed, hands in your lap, but thereâs a mischievous glint in your eyes. your tongue presses against your top teeth as you chuckle, fully aware of what youâve just filmed. you donât say much, but the knowing look on your face says enough.
the final shot of this segment shows you and drew after the director calls cut, the tension immediately breaking as laughter spills between you. you pull away first, eyes bright as you turn toward the monitors, eager to check the footage.
drew, still lingering in place, rubs his bottom lip with his thumb, watching you for a beat before finally trailing after you, taking his time.
the next shot follows your character, leading drew by the hand, weaving through the streetlights, your destination clear in your mind, and you toss him the car keys without hesitation. drew catches them, glancing between you and the keys in his hand, a flicker of disbelief crossing his face. the trust is unexpected, almost daring. but after a brief hesitation, he gives in, climbing into the driverâs seat while you swing into the passenger side, watching him with a smirk.
the screen quickly shifts to behind-the-scenes footageâhandheld, slightly shaky, like a friend capturing the moment on their phone. you lean halfway out of the car window, hair tousled from the wind. your voice is light, playful, as you drag out the words dramatically, âweâve been filming for the last six hours! i wanna go home.â
you make a face at the camera, and off-screen laughter follows. just as the camera pans back toward the car, drew reappears, slipping into the driverâs seat after what was clearly a break. he clocks the camera almost immediately, smiling as he watches you slide back inside, adjusting in your seat like youâre preparing for another take.
to: the car scene.
you're in the passenger seat, lip-syncing the lyrics, the camera catching you. your expression shifts between something teasing and something more heated, fingers toying with the hem of your dress as drew grips the wheel beside you.
then, another interview clip overlays the scene. you sit comfortably, your grin almost mischievous as you speak, âi wanted this music video to be very, very horny. like, so horny but also so fun, and freeing too.â
you pause, laughing as you push your hair back, âi really wanted to capture that feeling of instant attraction. like, that moment when you lock eyes with someone across the room and just know somethingâs about to happen. the whole video is about chasing that rush, that tension of being drawn to someone you shouldnât want but not being able to stop yourself.â
âso, yeah. i wanted it to feel intense, a little dangerous, a little intoxicating . . . like a night youâll never forget, even if it only lasts âtil sunrise.â
it cuts to a different segment of the micro interview. youâre sitting casually, your thumb nail between your teeth as you listen to your friend. the vibe is lighthearted, almost too laid-back, until your friend says, âyou should call him if you win that grammy.â
you freeze for a second, eyes widening slightly, then burst out laughing. sitting up straighter, you give her a look, almost like sheâs lost their mind, âare you serious?â
the final shot in the behind-the-scenes video captures you dramatically collapsing onto the mock-bedroom set, letting out an exaggerated groan as you flop onto the bed, completely wiped from weeks of filming. youâre on your back, hair splayed out around you like a halo, eyes half-closed as the exhaustion hits you full force.
drew, on the other hand, leans back against the headboard, legs sprawled out casually as if he could take on another round of filming, but still, his hand reaches out, and you take it without hesitation. your hands clasp in a silent victory, both of you relishing in the fact that youâve wrapped up the last take of the day.
âis that it?â you ask, glancing at the crew who are already packing up, and when they confirm it, a smile breaks across your face. you raise a fist in the air, a mock victory pose, causing a few of the crew members to chuckle behind the camera.
the camera cuts back to you, but just a few minutes later, still lounging on the bed with drew, whoâs now looking at you with that signature grin of his. you sit up, stretching your arms over your head, and your voice is light as you ask, âwas that fun?â youâre genuinely checking in, making sure drewâs feeling good after all the intense shots.
drew pauses for a beat, then lets out a little laugh, clearly still feeling the buzz from the shoot. âi had . . . a blast,â he says, but thereâs something about the way he says it, maybe itâs the glint in his eyes or the slight inflection in his voice, that makes you burst out laughing.
you start to get up from the bed, your laugh still lingering in the air as you move out of the frame. the camera stays on drew as he watches you go, looking like heâs still processing the day. just as you move out of view, someone walks in from the side to start cleaning up the set, but drew doesnât miss a beat.
âiâm being so honest right now, dude,â he says, his grin turning playful, and you hear the laughter behind the camera as they capture this moment.
after the music video shoot wraps, you and drew keep in touch. with the release of the video just around the corner, your team suggests posting a teaser to build hype on social media. itâs the perfect opportunity, so you agree.
another mini shoot is set up for the teaser. drew and his team arrive, and even though this shoot is way more relaxed than the last one, the excitement is still palpable. youâre going to film a short, tantalizing snippet.
the plan is for the camera to follow your feet clicking against the floor as you walk down a hallway, but your face wonât be seen. you stop in front of a door and knock before the cameras on you now.
the moment the door opens, your smile is real as you grab his hand. you pull him with you down the hall, and the camera focuses on the back of his head, leaving fans to wonder who he is. as you pass the wall, the words of the song title come to life to tease which song its for.
as soon as the video drops, the internet blows up. fans canât stop guessing who your mystery man is.
â its drew isnt it â
â PLEASE TELL ME THATS WHO I RHKNK IT IS â
â y/n y/l/n u did NOT. â
others speculate wildly, throwing out all kinds of guesses. you both meet up to hang out during the lead-up to your album release, laughing about the crazy theories online. some fans are dead sure itâs him, while others debate who it could be. the excitement only grows, and you secretly enjoy the fun of keeping them guessing.
but everything falls into place when you win that grammy. itâs the culmination of everything youâve worked so hard for, and as the announcement echoes through the room, youâre overwhelmed with emotions. you honestly didnât expect this, especially as a first-timer. they are hard to come by, and youâre honestly convinced this is going to be your one and only.
the wave of emotion hits you as you hug your loved ones, the tears welling up in your eyes. you quickly pat under your eyes with your fingers, trying to compose yourself as you walk toward the stage. all eyes are on you, and the spotlight is so bright you almost canât bear to look directly at it.
you hold the grammy in your hands, trying to keep your composure as you deliver the half-planned speech youâd scribbled down earlier. itâs all so surreal.
âgod, i actually thought i was about to pass out when they said my name,â you admit, and the audience of familiar faces laughs.
âi just canât believe iâm standing here right now, receiving this. i have poured my heart into this album, into my music, and i never imagined it would lead me here. to my team and family, youâre the reason this dream is even possible. to my fans, thank you for making this journey so worth it. this award is for us. i love you all, and iâll keep making music as long as youâll keep listening. thank you all so much.â
eventually youâre off the stage and sitting at your table, still processing everything that's just happened. there are few who still congratulate you from their seats around you. your friend, sitting beside you, gives you a look, the kind that says it all. you know what to do.
you hesitate. was she serious about what she said before about if you won? you roll your eyes, but you canât ignore the pull of it. you grab your phone and turn it on briefly, waiting for an appropriate moment. your thumb hovers over the keyboard for a moment before you type out the message to drew:
hey. can i call u tonight?
a/n: such an abrupt ending LOL but i have to cut it off here bc i have my first day of my new class tmr n im supposed to get up in 2 hours đ ILL REWRITE THIS OR DO A PART 2 IF I REREAD THIS LATER N NOT LIKE IT

the fire crackles, sending embers into the air that flicker for a moment before disappearing into the dark. itâs small, but enough to keep everyone warm, enough to make it feel like they still have something to hold onto.
youâve sat next to kiara, eyes distant, barely focused. the silence stretches, heavy, before john b speaks again.
âmaybe they just washed up further down the beach,â he says, voice strained, raw. heâs referring to sarah and jj, who none of you have seen since the storm. âwe just gotta keep looking.â
a beat.
heâs holding onto everything before he lets himself believe that sarah and jj are gone. you donât blame him.
âweâll look at first light,â kie says, determined, like she refuses to think otherwise.
you believe it too. or maybe you just need to.
the firelight flickers in rafeâs eyes as he stares into it, his expression unreadable, but you know heâs feeling everything the rest of you are. after everything, after all of this, heâs part of this now. he always has been.
âiâm gonna, uh . . . try to get some shut-eye,â he murmurs, voice low, uncertain. he knows no one will really care, knows the others will probably stay up because they canât sleep. he wants to at least try. try to sleep it off and not have to think about his sister being gone.
but when he pushes himself up, brushing sand off his hands, you gather your jacket and move too. âme too,â you mumble, though itâs not really about the sleep.
you donât know what youâre looking for, not exactly. but you know that wherever rafe goes, thatâs where youâll settle too.
he chooses a spot just a few feet away from the fire, still close enough to feel the warmth but lower, on the slope of the beach where the sand is softer. at first, he doesnât lay down. just sits, staring out at the dark, endless stretch of sand.
you pull your jacket on, the sleeves slightly damp still, and lower yourself beside him. knees pulled to your chest, arms draped loosely over them. the fire crackles behind you, but all you hear is the ocean. relentless, constant.
you shift your gaze away from him, staring down at the sand between your boots. your thoughts are too loud, crashing into each other in a way that makes your head ache, but still, you speak, âyou think theyâre still out there?â
the words leave your mouth before you can second-guess them, before you can stop yourself from making the air even heavier than it already is.
rafe doesnât move at first. doesnât even blink. his eyes stay locked on the dark horizon, but after a long moment, he exhales sharply through his nose, shaking his head.
âjesus, y/n,â he mutters, his voice rough, edged with something unreadable. âcan we not?â he doesnât say it with anger, but thereâs something firm in the way he says it, something final.
your throat tightens, and you press your lips together, inhaling slowly through your nose. heâs right. all youâve done today is think and talk about it. but stopping, letting it go, even just for a second, feels impossible. still, you donât argue.
you want to say something, anything, but your mind feels empty, exhausted, useless until you remember earlier. the closet. the way his wrists were tied. the way his eyes burned into yours when you placed the food in front of him, like he didnât know whether to thank you or hate you for it.
the way he spat those words at you like heâd been holding them in for months. your stomach twists at the thought, and before you can stop yourself, you glance at him again.
âyou meant what you said earlier?â your voice is quieter this time, careful.
rafe finally turns his head toward you, brow furrowing slightly, âwhen?â
âback in the closet.â
his jaw tightens. you can see the way his fingers flex against his knees, the slight shift in his posture, like he already regrets looking at you.
you swallow, steadying yourself before continuing, âyou said it looked like i just left you behind.â your voice wavers, but you push through it. âlike you werenât anything to me anymore.â
a sharp exhale leaves his nose. he rubs a hand across his temple, shaking his head. âyeah, well, i did mean that,â he mutters, voice lower now, strained. âdoesnât mean i wanna fucking talk about it.â
you look down, biting the inside of your cheek. but you donât drop it. âbut you just said you meant it,â you press, watching the way his knee bounces slightly, a restless habit heâs always had.
he doesnât answer right away. his throat bobs as he swallows, his fingers twitching like he wants to reach for something but doesnât know what. âwhatâd you expect me to think, y/n?â his voice is rough. âyou look at me like iâm nothing. like iâm not even worth thinking about.â
his words cut deep, but thereâs no real anger behind them. just exhaustion. and your breath catches slightly, but you donât look away from him.
âyou were something to me, rafe,â you say, and thereâs no hesitation this time. âyou still are.â
his head turns fully now, his eyes locking onto yours, searching. but he doesnât say anything, and then he exhales, long and slow, shaking his head as he looks back at the sand, âdoesnât feel like it.â
the silence between you stretches, but thereâs more to say. you know it. he knows it.
rafe exhales sharply, dragging a hand down his face before settling his elbows on his knees again, fingers twisting together. you can feel the tension radiating off of him, the way he keeps shaking his head slightly like heâs trying to physically push the thoughts out of his head. but he canât.
so you shift slightly, pulling your knees tighter against your chest, and before you can second-guess yourself, you whisper, âjust say it.â
rafeâs head turns toward you, brow furrowed. âwhat?â
you swallow, watching him carefully. âeverything youâre thinking about. everything you havenât said. justââ you gesture vaguely, feeling the exhaustion pulling at you, but pushing through it. âget it out.â
rafe scoffs under his breath, shaking his head again, eyes flicking back toward the fire. âdoesnât matter,â he mutters. ânot like it changes anything.â
âmaybe not,â you admit, voice softer now. âbut youâre gonna lose your mind if you keep it all in.â
he doesnât say anything for a long moment. just stares at the flames, his jaw tight, his knee bouncing slightly. but then, he breathes, shaking his head as his voice drops lower.
âit justâ it feels like everything got fucked, yâknow?â he mutters, his hands twitching against his knees. âall of it. like, one second, weâreââ he gestures vaguely between you, his voice almost bitter, probably referring to when you two were together, ââand then the next, you just see right through me, like i was never anything to you. and now sarah aâ and jj,â his voice catches slightly, and he drags a hand through his hair, âi donât know how the fuck weâre supposed to come back from this.â
you watch him, feeling your chest tighten, feeling your fingers dig into the fabric of your jacket. but you donât interrupt, you just let him talk.
âyouâre supposed to trust the people who give a shit about you,â he continues, but itâs like itâs physically hurting him to say it. âbut itâs like, i donât know. i donât know where i stand anymore. and itâs fucking exhausting.â
he exhales again, shaking his head, muttering under his breath. âand maybe itâs selfish,â his voice cracks slightly, but he pushes through it. âbut all i can think about is how much i fucking hate feeling like this. like iâmââ
he stops.
presses his lips together.
but you already know the words sitting on the edge of his tongue.
like heâs alone.
like he always has been.
your throat tightens.
your fingers twitch slightly against your knees.
and then, quieter now, almost like heâs afraid to say it,
âi have a feeling you got everything you wanted,â he mutters, his voice raw. âand youâre not wasting time stuck here like me. youâre just thinking itâs a small thing that happened.â
he exhales sharply, his hands clenching into fists as his gaze drops back to the sand.
âthe world ended when it happened to me.â
the words settle between you, heavy and unshakable. you stare at him, your breath caught somewhere in your throat. because for the first time, rafe isnât just angry. he isnât just bitter or frustrated or hiding behind sharp words and sharp edges. heâs just hurt. and for the first time, heâs actually letting you see it.
he wonât look at you now, his jaw tight, his hands still curled into fists against his knees. his shoulders rise and fall with each slow, uneven breath, like heâs trying to keep himself together, like heâs afraid that if he doesnât, heâll unravel completely.
and you get it.
because you feel it too.
you shift slightly, your fingers twitching against your jacket, your chest tight with something that feels dangerously close to regret. you donât know how to fix this, how to make up for everything unsaid, for everything broken between you. maybe you canât. but you can at least try.
you inhale slowly, pressing your lips together before speaking, voice barely above a whisper.
âit wasnât a small thing.â
rafeâs head turns slightly, but he doesnât look at you. his jaw clenches, like heâs waiting for you to say something else, like heâs expecting an argument, but you donât argue. you just exhale, gaze flickering to the horizon.
âit never was,â you continue, quieter now. ânot to me.â
rafe is silent, but his fists loosen slightly, his shoulders drop just a little.
you shift again, your knee brushing against his, and you donât move away. you donât pull back like you normally would, donât let yourself retreat into the silence. instead, you let it happen. you let the warmth of his skin ground you, let the steady rise and fall of his breath remind you that, after everything, youâre both still here.
his fingers twitch against his knee. and then, so quietly you almost miss it,
âthen why did it feel like i was nothing to you?â
your breath catches. finally, rafe looks at you. his eyes are dark, but thereâs something else there now. something raw, something unguarded. heâs not just asking because heâs angry. heâs asking because he needs to know. and you owe him an answer.
you wet your lips, fingers curling around the fabric of your jacket as you search for the right words. âi donât know,â you admit, voice small. âi donâtâ i didnât mean for it to feel like that.â
rafe exhales through his nose, tilting his head back slightly, staring up at the sky like heâs trying to find answers in the stars. âthen what did you mean for it to feel like?â
you swallow. âlike i was scared,â you whisper. âlike i didnât know what to do. likeâ like everything was changing too fast and i couldnât keep up.â
rafe doesnât say anything for a long moment. but then, after what feels like an eternity, âyeah,â he mutters, voice low. âi get that.â and you believe him.
because despite everything, rafe does get it. he knows what it feels like to lose control, to feel like the ground is shifting beneath you faster than you can catch your balance. he knows what itâs like to be left behind.
and maybe thatâs why he doesnât pull away when you shift closer, when you let your shoulder press lightly against his.
maybe thatâs why he sighs, just barely, and leans into you, too.
the fire crackles softly, casting warm light over the both of you, over the quiet understanding that settles between you.
you donât say anything else.
you donât need to.
because for the first time in a long time, the silence between you doesnât feel like something broken.
it just feels like peace.

rafe stares at the card, his fingers gripping the edges so tightly the paper starts to bend. his breath is slow, shallow, like his body is forgetting how to function properly. the words blur together, but it doesnât matter. heâs already memorized them.
he lifts his gaze to his father. ward stands stiff, arms crossed, staring down at his shoes like heâs the one whoâs been blindsided. like heâs the one who just had his entire world gutted out of him in a single fucking sentence.
thereâs guilt in the way he exhales through his nose, in the way his jaw slides ever so slightly, but rafe doesnât give him the chance to speak.
âthis is real?â his voice comes out rough, barely above a whisper, as if saying it too loud will make it more true.
ward hesitates, then nods.
rafe lets out a short, breathless laugh, his chest rising sharply before sinking under the weight of it all. he shakes his head, tongue pressing against the inside of his cheek as he looks down at the card again, like maybe this time the words will rearrange themselves into something less impossible.
âso, what?â he scoffs, wetness pricking at his eyes. âthey just . . . deleted me? like a fucking file on a computer?â
ward sighs. long, slow, through his nose. he knew this would be hard to explain.
âhow many?â rafe asks. how many memories are gone now?
his father doesnât answer right away. his jaw shifts, gaze dropping to the floor like he doesnât want to say it. or maybe heâs just trying to soften the blow of something that canât be softened.
when he finally speaks, his voice is careful. deliberate. âall of âem, bud.â
rafe scoffs again, but itâs weaker this time, like his body is struggling to keep up with his disbelief. he smiles, but itâs the kind that only comes when someone is trying not to fall apart.
âno . . . no. she didnât. she wouldnât do that.â he shakes his head again, faster this time. âthatâs not even a fucking thingâ i mean, erasing someone from your mind? since when did we have the tech for that bullshit? that didnât happen.â
he throws the card onto the table like it burns to hold it any longer. gets up so fast his chair scrapes loudly against the floor. his chest is rising and falling too quickly, hands threading behind his head as he paces across the kitchen, back and forth, back and forth, his fingers digging into his scalp.
ward doesnât stop him. he just watches, his own grief settling deep in his expression. and maybe itâs not the same kind of grief. maybe itâs not the gut-wrenching, all-consuming, âiâve lost the love of my life kindâ, but itâs still there.
because heâs seen lucuna inc. before, out near the edge of the island, where no one really looks unless theyâre desperate enough to. heâs seen it and heâs hoped no one he loves would ever consider walking through its doors.
but you did. a girl who once sat at his dinner table, who used to laugh with his family, who was supposed to be his daughter-in-law one day.
was rafe really that bad? bad enough to make you want to erase him?
rafe stops pacing so suddenly itâs like something clicks into place inside him. he turns, slipping out of the kitchen without another word. his father calls after him, but he doesnât listen. his hands move on their own, grabbing his keys from the hook by the front door, pushing outside, stepping into the thick outer banks air like heâs coming up for air after drowning.
he doesnât know where heâs going.
apparently, he canât go to you.
but heâll do something.

rafe cameron x reader ; âsuper rich kids with nothing but loose endsâ
plot ââ trapped in a world of money, parties, and nothing real, you spend your nights with your boyfriend and your secrets with rafe who watches, waits, and wonders if the man who holds your hand knows about the one who holds your heart.
content ââ heavy inspo from âsuper rich kidsâ by frank & âmoth to a flameâ by shm / the weeknd, bestfriend!rafe, toxic relationships (both romantic & platonic), jealousy & possessiveness, alcohol & substance use, angst & morally gray characters
authors note ââ EEEEHEHE ok potential mini-series that might not go past like 3 parts bc everyone knows i cant commit to a full series for the life of me. lmk if ud like to be tagged !
the thing about you and rafe is that no oneâs really surprised.
not your friends, not your parents, not even yourself. maybe itâs the money, maybe itâs the recklessness, but from the moment you met him, it was like the universe had already decided that you two would burn bright and fast, beautiful in the way a car crash is beautiful.
but rafe is not your boyfriend. heâs your best friend.
and thatâs what makes it worse.
because he watches. he watches as your boyfriend grips your wrist too tight at parties, as he talks down to you like youâre something small and breakable. he watches when your smile falters, when you laugh at things that arenât funny just to keep the peace. he watches as you excuse every bruise, every raised voice, every night spent crying in the backseat of his car.
and it drives him fucking crazy.
but this is your world. toxic, rich-kid relationships wrapped in luxury, diamonds and daddyâs lawyers, bruises covered by designer sleeves. people like you donât have real problems. you are young, rich, and beautiful. what else could you possibly need?
but deep down, you crave something more. something real. something that doesnât feel like drowning.
for now, though, you are here. at rafeâs house, where the party is in full swing.
the backyard is an ocean of bodies, with girls in bikinis, boys in linen shirts, everyone sun-kissed and high off something. the pool glows neon blue, rippling under the soft glow of lanterns strung between palm trees.
inside, the house is just as chaotic, with weed smoke curling in the air, bottles of liquor sweating on marble countertops, someoneâs laughter breaking into a scream of delight. the walls are lined with people who donât care about anything beyond tonight, beyond the next drink, the next line, the next fleeting thrill.
and then thereâs rafe.
he is effortless in a way that makes people jealous. clear skin, sharp jawline, blunt dangling between his fingers like it belongs there. he moves through the crowd like he owns it, because, in a way, he does. the eldest cameron, heir to a fortune, the golden boy with a wicked grin and a dangerous temper.
but he isnât looking at them. heâs looking at you.
watching. waiting. knowing heâs going to have to step in soon.

is it okay to want your ex to be the person beside you when you wake up from a dream about them, even when you know youâre supposed to be moving on?
because if itâs not, then youâre already doing this all wrong.
you wake up too suddenly, almost like your own body betrayed you, forcing you out of something you werenât ready to leave behind. your eyes snap open, heart hammering, the kind of startled wake-up that leaves you disoriented for a moment, stuck between dream and reality.
you lift your head, blinking against the dark, and look down at the sheets pooled around your waist, then slowly, like maybe you already know what youâll find, you glance toward the other side of the bed.
empty.
your stomach sinks, but you tell yourself thatâs stupid. of course itâs empty. why wouldnât it be?
but it doesnât matter what your head knows. itâs what your heart feels that always screws you up, because for one blissful, delirious second, you expected him to be there. warmth beside you, an arm draped across your waist, his steady breathing pulling you back under.
but that was the dream.
and god, what a cruel dream.
you donât even know if you were just friends or something more in it, if youâd crossed back over that invisible line or if you were still dancing around it, but what you do know is how it felt. how you felt. that dizzy kind of giddiness, the way your stomach flipped with every glance, every touch, every little moment of something unspoken but understood. it felt like starting over, like all the space between you had been erased, like maybe you could still have him.
and then you woke up.
you swallow hard and let your head fall back against the pillow, eyes squeezing shut. you shouldnât be dreaming about him. you shouldnât be feeling like this.
youâre supposed to be getting over him.
but now itâs four in the morning, and youâre wide awake with a lingering ache in your chest, a knot in your stomach, and a dream you canât shake no matter how much you tell yourself it doesnât mean anything.
you try to sleep again. you roll over, adjust the blankets, close your eyes, and breathe deep like you read somewhere that might help, but it doesnât. so you grab your phone from the nightstand and scroll through tiktok, letting the mindless flood of videos wash over you, but none of them make you laugh, none of them distract you the way you want them to. the flashes of what you remember come every now and then.
you think about making food, something small, because eating always makes you sleepy. but that feels like too much effort, and the last thing you want is to be alone with your thoughts in the kitchen, staring at the clock and counting the hours until you have to pretend like youâre fine.
so you give up and swipe through your notifications instead, clearing some out, replying to a text from your mom, letting the dull routine of it settle you.
but then you see his name, just sitting there in your recents like it belongs, like it hasnât been haunting you since the breakup.
your thumb hesitates over the screen, and thatâs all it takes. the thought is already there, already burrowing into your brain like an instinct you canât fight.
you shouldnât. you know you shouldnât.
are you on non-speaking terms for now?
is it safe to send just one text?
but the dream is still fresh, still clinging to you like secondhand smoke, and every fiber of your being is screaming at you to just reach out. just once. just this one time.
before you can talk yourself out of it, before you can convince yourself to be strong, you tap his name and press the call button.
you sit up slowly, pressing your phone to your ear, and listen to the dial tone.
one ring.
two.
three.
your stomach twists. this was a mistake. heâs sleeping. maybe he has his ringer on and youâre waking him up. shame on you. you should hang up. you shouldâ
then a noise. a shift.
your breath catches, your heart lurches.
you pull the phone away, staring at the screen, frozen in panic. maybe it was nothing. maybe he just moved in his sleep. maybe he wonât even remember this in the morningâ
âhello?â
his voice is groggy, rough around the edges like he hasnât fully woken up yet. like he doesnât know whoâs calling him at this hour.
and holy shit, you almost hang up right then. almost.
but something in you makes you lift the phone back to your ear, makes you swallow the lump in your throat, makes you whisper, âhello?â
thereâs a pause, like maybe heâs still caught somewhere between sleep and reality. you hear the shift of fabric, the rustling of blankets as he moves, like heâs rolling onto his back, maybe rubbing at his face, trying to shake off the haze of sleep.
and then, recognition. ây/nâ hey? why are you up?â
your lips part, but for a moment, nothing comes out.
because what are you supposed to say? that you woke up from a dream about him, and it felt so real that for half a second, you thought heâd actually been there? that it left you feeling warm and whole and painfully desperate to hold onto something that isnât even yours anymore? that the idea of moving on feels impossible when your subconscious wonât even let you pretend youâre over it?
you swallow, forcing yourself to say something, anything, before the silence stretches too long.
âi couldnât sleep,â you whisper, and before the guilt can settle too deep in your chest, you add, âsorry if i woke you.â
on the other end, you hear him shift again. thereâs a faint rustling, the kind that makes you picture him shaking his head, before he murmurs, âyou didnât.â
you let out a small breath, a quiet scoff, something close to a laugh but not quite. âyeah?â your voice is just a little teasing, just a little skeptical. âyou sound like it.â
for a second, thereâs nothing. then he chuckles.
soft and low, the kind of laugh that makes your stomach twist, that makes you feel like youâve caught him in a lie. and you have, obviously. you know his voice too well, you can hear the exhaustion in it, the roughness in his throat. you know he was asleep. but heâs trying to make you feel better about it, trying to brush it off like it doesnât matter.
itâs nothing. itâs barely anything.
but itâs enough to make you slip.
you press your lips together, fingers tightening around your phone. because for a second, just a second, it feels normal again. like you can still call him in the middle of the night just because, like you can hear his sleepy laugh and joke about it, like you havenât lost this part of him.
but then reality catches up.
your stomach sinks, the warmth in your chest cooling into something heavier, something bitter. your smile fades, and you shift, pressing your forehead against your knee, closing your eyes.
you shouldnât be doing this. you shouldnât be letting yourself fall back into something you know isnât yours anymore.
but you force yourself to get to the point.
âwould it be stupid if i asked you to come over?â you murmur, barely louder than a breath, barely brave enough to ask, but desperate enough to say it anyway.
the second the words leave your mouth, you regret them. the silence is immediate. so much silence that it makes your stomach twist, makes your pulse spike, makes you feel like you should just end the call right now and save yourself from whatever is about to happen next.
you pull your phone away for a second, checking to see if the call is even still connected.
ây/n.â
itâs soft, but the weight behind it is heavy. thereâs something careful in the way he says your name, something almost hesitant, like heâs reminding you of something neither of you want to say out loud.
you know what heâs about to tell you. that thereâs a reason you arenât in each otherâs beds anymore. thereâs a reason you arenât supposed to be doing this. and suddenly, panic sets in.
ânevermind,â you rush out, shaking your head at yourself like he can see you. âthat wasâ i shouldnât have asked. i justâ iâm tired. iâm sorry i woke you, iâll let you go. goodnightâ"
âstop.â his voice is firm, cutting through your words before you can finish. you freeze, fingers curling into the fabric of your blanket, breath hitching, and you wait. you donât say anything.
then, more shuffling on his end. you strain to listen, and then it hits you. heâs moving. getting out of bed.
âyeah,â he exhales, voice still thick with exhaustion, but steady now. certain. âiâll be there.â
thereâs a pause, the quiet hum of the phone line stretching between you both. you can still hear him moving; maybe grabbing his keys, maybe slipping on a hoodie. the thought alone makes your stomach flip. then, his voice, softer this time. careful. âdo you need anything else?â
the question is simple, but thereâs something about the way he asks it that makes you hesitate. like heâs offering you something more than just his presence. like if you asked for it, heâd give you anything. but youâre already pushing it. you know that.
so you shake your head, pressing your lips together before making a small sound of refusal, âmm-mm.â
on the other end, drew exhales, barely audible, and when he speaks again, itâs quiet. steady. âalright,â and then the call ends.
you lower your phone from your ear, staring at the screen as the seconds of silence stretch on, until the brightness fades and leaves you staring at your own faint reflection.
your teeth sink into your bottom lip, eyes flickering toward your dresser, but youâre not really seeing it. your mind is running too fast, thoughts spiraling, pulling you in two different directions.
thereâs an uneasy feeling settling in your chest, pressing against your ribs. like maybe you shouldnât have done this. like maybe this is exactly why you and drew shouldnât be calling each other in the middle of the night anymore. but then, thereâs something else. something warmer.
because he agreed. without hesitation too. without a single question. heâs coming over. does that mean something? the thought almost makes you smile. hope.
drew doesnât live far, thankfully. all that space in los angeles, and yet, somehow, you both ended up just a mile or two apart. it had been convenient back then, when late-night filming ran over, when you were both too tired to do anything but collapse into each otherâs arms, when going home meant a five-minute drive instead of a long trek across the city.
it made sense, being close. youâd even talked about closing the distance completely before, like moving out of your separate places and into one together. it wasnât a serious discussion, more like a fleeting idea thrown out between shared meals and lazy mornings, but it had lingered. but you never put any real time into it. and maybe that was for the best. or maybe it wasnât.
because if drew can come over now, without question, without hesitation, just because you asked, then what would it have been like if you had actually lived together?
you canât stop your mind from running with the thought, from spiraling into a thousand different possibilities.
if you had shared a home, would he have stayed in your bed on nights like these, when you couldnât sleep, when the weight of missing him pressed heavy on your chest? or would he have made himself comfortable in some extra room, always just across the hall, close enough to feel present but far enough to keep a safe distance?
if you had already built a life under the same roof, would he have been the one to move out? or would he have stayed, finding excuses to linger, to keep things from changing too much, to hold on to something that neither of you were sure how to let go of?
or would he have stayed in the same bed, too disciplined to let emotions dictate his choices, too mature to act like sharing a bed meant something more than what it wasâjust sleep, just comfort, just the two of you existing in the same space like you always had?
because thatâs who drew is. realistic, rational, someone who believes in keeping things separate, even if it hurts.
he wouldnât have been reckless about it. he wouldnât have let longing turn into excuses or blurred lines. he would have figured out what to do, how to move forward, how to live in the same space while still trying to get over you. he wouldnât have let himself slip.
but you? you donât think youâd be able to pretend so easily. because lying next to him, feeling his presence just inches away, knowing it was him but that you werenât his anymore. it would break you, piece by piece, every single night.
but heâs there soon, riding up the elevator like itâs nothing, like this isnât something that should feel bigger than it is. like this isnât something that should be happening at all. ten minutes. thatâs all it takes.
when the knock comes, you practically stumble out of bed, feeling unsteady in your own body. you donât know how to carry yourself, donât know if you should be composed or apologetic, donât know if you should even be doing this. but you move anyway, making your way to the door on autopilot, fingers unsteady as they reach for the handle.
when you open it, there he is. hood on, sweats hanging low on his hips, a stupid pair of sandals on his feet like he didnât think twice about what he was wearing before leaving. like he didnât care. but his eyes . . . his tired, knowing, impossibly soft eyes, tell you otherwise.
and you feel it then. the guilt. all over again.
itâs humiliating, the way you canât get over him. the way your chest tightens just from seeing him stand in your doorway. the way he can read it all over your face like itâs written there in bold letters. he exhales, something quiet, something almost affectionate, and then murmurs, âcâmon, angel.â
his voice is low, thick with sleep, and it only makes you feel worse, but you let him in anyway. you step aside, and he moves past you, closing the door behind him, locking it with the ease of muscle memory. itâs dark. the lights are off, nothing illuminating the space except for the soft, golden glow bleeding through the thin curtain covering your balcony door. itâs just enough to see him, to see the way heâs watching you, the way his brows pull together when he sees the wetness brimming in your eyes.
you cover your face with your hands, disappointment settling deep in your stomach. you shouldnât have called him. you shouldnât have let him come. you shouldnât be standing here, crying in front of him like youâre still his to comfort.
but then his arms are around you, wrapping around your shoulders, around your head, pulling you into his chest before you can even think to push him away.
heâs warm.
his scent, familiar, overwhelming, engulfs you instantly. and suddenly, it all feels . . . warm in here. safe. like something you shouldnât still want. like something you donât know how to let go of.
and soon youâre back under the sheets, and so is he.
itâs quiet. on purpose.
he sits upright against the headboard, back pressed into the pillows, the fabric of his hoodie bunching slightly where his shoulders meet the wood. youâre not sure where heâs looking, but his gaze is far away, unfocused, lost in thoughts he wonât say out loud.
you donât try to figure them out. you donât ask. instead, you just let yourself sink into him, pressing your cheek against his chest, feeling the steady rise and fall beneath you. his warmth seeps into your skin, into the cotton of your sleep shirt, into the spaces between each breath. it feels familiar. dangerously so.
one of your hands stays curled between your bodies, fingers pressing into your own palm like youâre trying to hold something in. the other rests lightly on his abdomen, just for a second, just enough to feel the soft give of fabric over skin. hesitation creeps in, a warning, a reminder, but you ignore it. your fingers trace a barely-there path lower, brushing against his hand.
he doesnât pull away.
your fingertips graze his knuckles first, featherlight, and then you take his hand completely, slipping your fingers between his, linking them like muscle memory.
he squeezes.
itâs subtle, almost unconscious, but itâs there. his hand is warm, slightly calloused, the way itâs always been. the way it shouldnât still feel so right.
he exhales slowly, and you hear it more than you see it, feel it more than you acknowledge it. but when you glance up at him, you catch the shift in his face. the slight furrow of his brows. the parting of his lips, like thereâs something sitting on his tongue, something he wonât say.
his eyes are trained on nothing. somewhere in the distance. worried. like he knows this is wrong too. but he stays. neither of you move, neither of you loosen your grip.
he reaches over and turns off the bedside lamp, but nothing really changes. the silence lingers. the warmth stays. you both just lay there, tangled in something you shouldnât be, holding onto something neither of you know how to let go of.

â it all came crashing down again. family dinner at the camerons. i swear i tried, i really did. i didnât want to be that girl anymore. the one they all whisper about behind my back, the one they think is just a spoiled, bitchy princess. i really thought i was getting better. but i guess i was wrong.
iâm so angry at myself, i canât even see straight. i was rude. i didnât mean to be, but i was to everyone. & i know they saw it. i saw the looks, heard the tension. i could feel it, like they were all waiting for me to screw up. waiting for me to be the person theyâve always known. i tried to prove them wrong, but i ended up just making it worse.
and sarah?? she just doesnât get it. i donât even know why i said half of the things i did. she said something that just triggered me & i couldnât stop myself.
i just started spitting out words, things i probably didnât even mean, all because i wanted to hurt her the way i was hurt. because i couldnât stand the thought that maybe they were right about me. & rafe had to intervene too. it was so fucking embarrassing.
it was like the moment she opened her mouth, i became that girl again. the girl who canât hold her tongue, the girl who lashes out when she feels cornered. & maybe thatâs exactly what i am. maybe i havenât changed. maybe they were right all along.
itâs like, every time i try to take a step forward, i end up falling so far back & i canât even pick myself up anymore.
like whatâs the point of changing if nothing changes? whatâs the point of trying to be better when people are always going to see you as the same bitch youâve always been?
maybe i really havenât changed. â
the journal is gripped tightly in your hand as you read the words that spill from the page, feeling the weight of the other y/nâs heartache.
everything she says, all the bitterness and the regret, it feels so raw, so real, and it stings like something youâve felt before. you donât know if youâre even supposed to feel sorry for her, but something tugs at your chest still.
the y/n who wrote this, she really believed it, didnât she? she believed she hadnât changed, that no matter how much she tried, she was always going to be stuck in this version of herself. the girl who could never win.
a soft sigh slips from your lips as you shut the journal with a soft thud. you toss it onto the desk like it might catch fire if you hold it any longer and lean back in the chair with a sigh.
for a moment, you just sit there, staring at the closed journal, your thoughts spinning. itâs clear now how much that argument with sarah weighed on her.
even if sarah and rafe donât care about it anymore, because they donât, right? otherwise, sarah wouldnât have been so friendly when you first landed here, and rafe wouldnât have looked so damn happy to wake up next to you. her.
but jesus, it mustâve taken a toll if she felt the need to spill her guts onto these pages.
you run your hands back through your hair, bringing your knees up to your chest as you try to make sense of it all. so, whatâs the point of this? why are you here? why her? you donât get it. any of it. but for some reason, it feels like time is slipping through your fingers, like thereâs some invisible clock ticking down, and if you donât figure out what the hell youâre supposed to do soon, youâll never make it back home.
your chest tightens at the thought, and you look back at the journal on the desk. it doesnât hold the answers you need, but for a second, you feel like maybe itâs the only thing tying you to the pieces of her life.
you will get back home.
you have to.
the first floor of the home feels colder than you expected, but you can hear something downstairs in the basement. itâs just muffled voices, sarahâs laugh, rafe saying something you canât quite make out.
you take a slow breath, pulling your jacket tighter around your body as you walk down the steps. the closer you get, the more your chest tightens, like youâre walking into something youâre not supposed to see.
from the last few steps, you spot them. sarahâs leaning against the glass wall of the wine cellar, arms crossed loosely over her chest, her head tilted back in laughter. rafe is crouched inside the glass room, fiddling with something in his hands, while ward kneels near an empty wine rack, muttering something under his breath.
you havenât been down here yet. the room feels so untouched, so pristine, like it belongs in one of those glossy magazines about rich peopleâs homes. thereâs a bar in the far left corner of the room, the walls are lined with racks of expensive wine bottles, each label perfectly aligned. the air is cooler here, crisp and sharp, carrying the faint scent of oak and something else you canât quite place.
rafe is the first to notice you. he glances over his shoulder as he stands, his foot pressing against the ground for balance. his hands fidget for a second before he straightens, brushing them over the front of his shirt. sarah notices his distraction and follows his gaze, her laugh fading into a quiet smile as she turns to look at you.
and then thereâs ward. crouched near the wine rack, he drags a hand down his face and jaw, his movements slow and deliberate, like heâs trying to collect himself. when his eyes meet yours, the air shifts.
the tension is immediate. it always is.
you feel it in the way sarah and rafe go quiet, not because they have anything against you, but because itâs almost instinctual when wardâs in the room. you canât blame them.
rafeâs the first to move. he runs a hand over his buzzed hair, his lips parting like heâs about to say something to ward, but instead, he steps out of the glass room and toward you. his hand reaches out to gently grasp your shoulders, his touch grounding.
âhey, babe,â he says softly, his voice low enough that it doesnât carry far. âwhat are youâ what are you doing up here? i thought you said you were reading.â
right, the lie you told him so you can read his real girlfriends journal.
you open your mouth to respond, but ward cuts in from behind the glass. âitâs fine, rafe,â he says, his tone even but clipped, like heâs dismissing the entire situation before it can escalate.
rafeâs grip on your shoulders tightens for a moment before he glances back at his dad. you follow his gaze, your eyes locking on ward as he stands, clearing his throat. his hand drags down his beard again, and he turns his attention back to the wine bottles.
he adjusts one of them, then another, like heâs mentally calculating if theyâre placed correctly. finally, he straightens, his shoulders rolling back as he steps out of the cellar.
rafeâs hand slides down to yours, his fingers wrapping around yours as he gently pulls you off the stairs and onto the tile floor. ward doesnât say anything as he walks past. he nods at you, a brief acknowledgment, before continuing up the stairs.
you gnaw on your bottom lip, trying to ignore the knot forming in your stomach. what could this version of you have possibly done to make him act like this all the time?
rafe looks back at sarah, whoâs still standing near the wine racks, her expression unreadable. then he turns back to you, his voice softer now. âiâll be back, alright?â he says, squeezing your hand gently. âwe can watch our movie tonight.â
âbut dad wanted to watch that new movie with us in the living room tonight,â sarah pipes up, her voice cutting through the quiet. she shifts her weight, her arms crossing over her chest. âare you seriously bailing on him again? you already did last month. heâs not gonna be so happy.â
rafeâs jaw tightens, and he snaps at her, âyeah, but dad is never happy.â
you know that isnât true. ward was literally just laughing before you came downstairs. rafeâs just trying to make you feel better, to shift the blame onto someone else.
he looks at you again, his gaze softening. âiâll be there soon, okay?â he promises, leaning down to press a quick kiss to your lips before disappearing up the stairs.
you stand there in silence, your arms wrapping around yourself instinctively, as if to shield against the invisible judgment that seems to follow you everywhere in this house.
youâre not even sure why you feel this way. itâs not your fault ward doesnât like you. itâs not even you he doesnât like. but being in the place of someone who carries so much baggage with him makes it impossible not to take it personally.
you glance toward sarah, who hasnât moved from her spot near the bar. she doesnât say anything at first, just looks at you with an unreadable expression. then, with a light shrug, she pulls out a stool and sits down, leaning her elbows on the bar behind her.
âhey,â she says casually, her voice cutting through the quiet, âat least he only left the room this time. you know, instead of muttering something under his breath like he used to.â
your brows furrow, and for a moment, you just stare at her, trying to figure out if sheâs serious. sheâs smiling, clearly trying to lighten the mood, but her words settle awkwardly in your chest.
you huff, crossing the room and sliding onto the stool next to her. âis that supposed to make me feel better?â you ask, your voice low and a little sharp, though not intentionally.
sarahâs smile falters. her shoulders straighten, and she tilts her head slightly, studying you. âi mean . . .â she starts, but then stops, her frown deepening. âyouâre really upset about this, huh?â
you donât answer right away. you just look down at the polished wood of the bar, tracing an invisible line with your finger.
sarah doesnât press you for a response. instead, she leans back a little, resting her hands on the edge of the bar. âlook,â she says after a moment, her tone softer now, âi know my dad. heâs . . . stubborn. i mean like, painfully stubborn. me and rafe and even wheezie get it from him. but heâll get over it. he always does. and honestly, heâs kind of stupid if he doesnât see you for who you really are.â
you glance at her, surprised by the conviction in her voice. âand who am i, exactly?â
sarah smiles, but itâs not the teasing kind youâre used to. itâs thoughtful, almost sad. âyouâre someone who loves my brother. and i mean, really loves him. i never thought iâd see that, you know? someone like you, loving someone like rafe.â
your brows knit together, and you shift in your seat, tilting your head. âsomeone like me?â
she hesitates, her gaze dropping for a second before meeting yours again. âyeah,â she says quietly. âyouâre . . . you. independent, smart, ambitious. you donât take anyoneâs crap, not even his. and trust me, he needs that. but more than that, youâve always been real, like authentic. even when you were kind of a bitch, and sorry, but you were sometimes, you were just . . . lost. we all were.â
her words hit you harder than you expect, and youâre not sure why. maybe itâs because sheâs seeing y/n, like really seeing her, in a way that no one else in this house seems to.
âyouâve been one of my best friends for years,â sarah continues, her voice steady but warm. âeven when we werenât as close, i always knew you were still you. and now? now, youâre finding yourself again. and itâs really good to see. even if it took my idiot brother to bring you back.â
you laugh softly, shaking your head. âi donât know if iâm really âback.ââ
sarah shrugs, leaning forward on her elbows. âmaybe not. but youâre getting there. and honestly, if my dad doesnât see that? if he doesnât see how much you love rafe, how much youâre trying? then heâs an even bigger idiot than i thought.â
you canât help but grin at that, a small, genuine smile tugging at your lips. âthatâs your dad youâre talking about.â
âyeah, well,â sarah says, grinning back, âhe deserves it sometimes.â
thereâs a moment of quiet between you, but itâs not uncomfortable. itâs the kind of silence that feels like an understanding, like a bridge being built.
âand . . . iâm actually, like, so sorry for last week,â you say with a wave of your hand. âfor the way i blew up on you. i couldâve handled it so much better, but i didnât. and thatâs on me. iâm trying to do better, to be better, so stuff like that doesnât happen again.â
sarahâs eyes soften, and she reaches over to place a hand on your thigh, giving it a gentle squeeze. âoh my god, y/n, itâs fine,â she says, her tone light and reassuring. âseriously. one argument isnât going to ruin us. i know youâre trying, and i see it. besides, if weâve survived rafeâs terrible cooking, i think we can survive anything.â
you canât help but laugh at that even though the memories arenât yours, but the tension in your chest is easing just a little. âyouâre not wrong,â you play it off, shaking your head.
sarah snorts, leaning back on her stool. âsee? weâve been through worse. and weâre still here.â
then, she straightens up, her expression turning more serious.
âyou really are changing, y/n,â she says, her voice soft but firm. âand i like this new version of you. and someday, the whole worldâs gonna see it too. especially when weâre traveling to every country, helping everyone, saving who we can.â
you blink, caught off guard by the sudden shift, âtraveling.â
sarah nods, her smile returning, though itâs tinged with something bittersweet. âyeah. remember? that stupid plan we made in the eighth grade. i canât believe i remember that. you and me, seeing the world, doing something that matters. i mean, weâre obviously still doing that, right?â
her words stir something in you, something deep and unspoken. you donât remember reading about it in the journal, but it feels so warm.
as far as you can tell, in the show it was like sarahâs life was pretty much just figured out for her, as if sheâd be stuck in outerbanks all her life but . . . even y/n managed to build plans with her to explore the world. sarah didnât need some treasure hunting plot, she had y/n.
âyeah,â you say softly, your voice barely above a whisper. âweâre still doing that.â
sarahâs smile widens, and before you can say anything else, she leans in, wrapping her arms around you in a tight hug. you hesitate for only a second before hugging her back, resting your chin on her shoulder.
but the hug ends too quickly, and not in the way you expect. one second, sarahâs leaning forward, and the next, sheâs losing her balance.
you feel yourself teetering backward, your hand instinctively shooting out to steady yourself on the edge of the bar, but itâs no use, sarahâs grip slips, and in her panic, she reaches for the counter.
the sound of glass shattering on the floor is instant. sharp. final.
your heart jumps into your throat as both of you freeze, wide-eyed.
âoh my god,â you whisper, staring at the bar even though you canât see the damage from where youâre sitting. your mouth falls open, and you glance at sarah, whose face is twisted into a mixture of guilt and disbelief.
âoh my god,â sarah echoes, her voice quieter but no less panicked. sheâs leaning over the counter, trying to peek at the mess below, though itâs clear she canât see anything either.
you donât know whether to laugh or panic, and for a few seconds, you do neither. you just stare at her, waiting for her reaction.
finally, sarah pulls back and looks at you, her lips pressed into a tight line as if sheâs trying to hold it together. but then her expression cracks, and she lets out a breathy, almost defeated laugh.
âokay. okay, this is fine,â she says, more to herself than to you. âiâll clean it up. just . . . go upstairs, and iâll meet you up there.â
âare you sure?â you ask, watching as she makes her way across the room toward a neatly hung broom and dustpan set on the wall.
âyes, iâm sure,â she says, already pulling the broom off its hook. âthis isnât my first time breaking something down here. trust me, iâve got this.â
you chuckle, shaking your head as you stand. âif you say so,â you say, still feeling a little guilty.
you linger for a moment, watching as she starts sweeping up the shards of glass with practiced ease. then, with a final glance over your shoulder, you head for the stairs.
you take the last step cautiously, your hand grazing the banister as your eyes scan the room. thatâs when you see him.
rafe is just leaving the kitchen, his broad shoulders disappearing through the sliding glass door that leads to the backyard.
âaâright, iâll be back,â he calls out, his voice carrying easily through the space. you watch him go, your gaze lingering on the door for a moment before it hits you. youâre not alone.
ward is still in the kitchen. heâs standing at the head of the island, facing you, his hands resting on the countertop. his posture is stiff, almost tense, like heâs deep in thought.
your first instinct is to turn around, to slip quietly into the living room and make your way to the staircase that leads up to rafeâs room. oh, wonder how thisâll play out. if wardâs here, he probably doesnât want you here.
he doesnât move at first. his hands rest on the edge of the counter, his gaze cast downward like heâs deep in thought or maybe just tired. for a second, it looks like heâs about to scratch the back of his head and walk away, but he stays rooted in place.
and then, before you can stop yourself, you take a step forward.
âwhy donât you like me?â
your voice comes out stronger than you expect, cutting through the silence like a knife.
ward freezes. his head lifts slightly, his eyes locking onto yours with a sharpness that makes your breath hitch. at first, he looks almost offended, his brows pulling together in a way that feels like a warning. but then, slowly, his expression shifts.
he doesnât say anything.
âno, seriously,â you press, your voice a little shakier now but still firm. âwhy donât you like me? for god knows how long, youâve been nothing but . . . or no, youâve been literally nothing.â
wardâs gaze doesnât waver, but thereâs something in the way he tilts his head slightly, like heâs listening even if he doesnât want to.
âi canât wrap my head around it,â you continue, the words coming faster now. âare we ever going to fix this? or are we just going to live the rest of our lives avoiding each other? because, honestly, it feels like we owe it to the family to at least try to communicate. every time i walk into a room with you, itâs like everything and everyone goes still. and i justâ what did i ever do to you?â
your voice cracks on the last word, and you hate it, hate how vulnerable you sound. but you donât look away. you canât.
wardâs head lowers slightly, his eyes narrowing as he stares at you. itâs the kind of look a parent gives when they hear something they donât like. itâs stern, almost disapproving. but youâre just as upset as he is, and you feel like you have every right to be.
he cocks his head toward the island, the motion subtle but deliberate. it takes you a moment to realize heâs gesturing to one of the stools.
âsit down,â he says.
you hesitate, your brows furrowing as you try to gauge his intentions. but then he turns away, walking over to the sink.
you watch as he picks up a towel and starts wiping down a plate. he doesnât look at you, doesnât say anything else, and for a second, you wonder if youâve made a mistake.
still, you move toward the stool, your steps cautious. you settle into it carefully, your shoulders tense but beginning to ease as you watch him work.
finally, ward glances at you out of the corner of his eye. he sets the plate down on the counter, his hand still holding the towel as he speaks.
âi donât hate you, you know,â he says, his voice calm but firm. his movements are slow, deliberate, like heâs trying to buy himself time before speaking again.
he presses his palms against the edge of the sink, his fingers flexing once before he turns his head slightly in your direction. âand i was wrong,â he says, nodding once like heâs confirming it to himself as much as to you. âi know that.â
your breath catches. of all the things you expected him to say, that wasnât one of them.
ward turns to face you fully, his expression unreadable but not as closed off as before. you donât say anything, just watching, waiting, because this conversation, this moment, shouldnât be happening with you. it should be happening with her.
but itâs not. itâs you. and you donât know what to do with that.
he sighs, rubbing his fingers together for a moment before crossing his arms over his chest. âiâve been watching you these past few months,â he admits, his voice quieter now, more measured. âi see you. i see how much youâve changed.â
you swallow hard, your fingers curling into your palms.
âyouâre getting better.â he nods again, almost like heâs convincing himself. âi donât think i ever said that to you. but i should have. you always had a good heart when you were a kid,â he continues, his voice distant, like heâs remembering. âbut somewhere along the way, you lost it.â
âbut then you came around,â he says, shaking his head slightly. âand i see that now. and look, i know iâm not the easiest person. i know i have my expectations, and i know that sometimes . . . i hold onto things longer than i should.â
he shakes his head slightly. âbut youâve proven me wrong, y/n.â
your breath catches.
ward looks at you like heâs really seeing you, his expression unreadable but different, not as guarded, not as cold. âi donât think iâve ever told you that. and i should have, and iâm sorry.â
your lips part slightly, but you donât speak. you just wait.
âfor a long time, i thought . . .â he pauses, considering his next words carefully. âi thought you were a bad influence on rafe, on the girls. and maybe, back then, you were. but now?â he exhales sharply through his nose, shaking his head. ânow, i see that youâre good for him. good for this family.â
âhe loves you,â ward continues, his voice steady. âand i know you love him. that means something. that matters.â
your fingers twitch slightly in your lap. you donât know what to say. you donât even know if you should say anything.
thereâs a beat of silence before he shifts his weight slightly and exhales. âlook, i know this week has been . . . a lot,â he says, almost like heâs testing the words before fully committing to them. âbut if youâd like, maybe, you could come with us somewhere for a few weeks like we used to when you guys were kids.â
your brows knit together slightly, lips parting in quiet surprise.
âit wouldnât be for a while, âtil maybe this summer,â he adds quickly, almost like heâs giving you an out. âbut if you wanted to.â
you donât know what to say. for the first time, ward cameron isnât just tolerating your presence. heâs inviting you in. holy shit, did you just seal the deal for y/nâs relationship with ward? did you seal the deal for yourself?
ward watches you, waiting, and when you donât say anything right away, he tilts his head slightly, his brows raising in that way dads do when theyâre expecting a response. then he exhales through his nose, almost amused, shaking his head slightly.
âwell?â he prompts, voice still firm but with an edge of something lighter, something that almost sounds like patience.
you blink. you donât know what to say, but ward is still looking at you, expectant but not forceful. so you swallow the hesitation in your throat and nod slightly. âyeah,â you say softly. âforgiven . . . thank you. for everything.â
his lips press together, and he gives a single nod, like heâs acknowledging the weight of those words. then, after a beat, he pats his palm against the counter once, as if sealing the conversation.
sarah steps onto the main floor, glancing behind her as if making sure the basement isnât suddenly going to collapse after the mess she just cleaned up, only to immediately pause.
her eyes flicker between you and her dad, seated at the island, not avoiding each other, not silently pretending the other doesnât exist.
she hesitates, like sheâs unsure if she walked in at the wrong time or if sheâs even in the right house. her brows furrow, her nose scrunches slightly.
âwhatâs going on?â her voice is like sheâs caught onto something she wasnât meant to see.
before you or ward can even think of an answer, the sound of the sliding door from the backyard shifts open, and rafeâs voice cuts in, casual and unaware. âhey, dad, i couldnât find theââ he starts, stepping inside, but he slows his pace almost immediately when his eyes land on the scene in front of him.
his gaze flickers between you and ward, then to sarah, like maybe sheâll have some kind of explanation, but sheâs just as clueless as he is. still, thereâs something almost amused in her expression, like sheâs already piecing things together faster than her brother.
rafe, on the other hand, looks at the two of you like this is some kind of elaborate prank. his lips part slightly, his head tilts, brows drawing together in that signature confused-cameron look.
ward, ever the composed one, is the first to break the silence. he leans back slightly, hands resting on the island as he shifts his attention to his kids. âwe were just talking,â he says simply, though thereâs an unmistakable ease to his voice that wasnât there before.
sarahâs eyes narrow slightly, suspicious, but thereâs a flicker of something impressed there too. rafe, still playing catch-up, shakes his head slightly, trying to process whatever the hell he just walked into.
before either of them can dig into it further, ward smoothly changes the subject. âwhat movie are you guys thinking for tonight?â he asks, his tone light, almost casual.
you barely have a moment to process the shift before he turns to you. ây/n, why donât you help me with the snacks?â
itâs not a question, itâs an invitation. a surprising, unexpected invitation.
rafe reacts immediately, jerking his head back like he just got whiplash. âwhat?â he blurts out, pure disbelief coloring his tone.
your eyebrows shoot up, equally taken aback, but you catch the tiniest hint of a smirk tugging at sarahâs lips, like sheâs already reading into this moment and what it means.
still, you nod, pushing yourself up from the stool, hesitating only for a second before making your way around the counter to where ward stands. as you pass rafe, you send him a look, a silent, wide-eyed âoh my godâ look, and he just blinks at you, still visibly struggling to compute whatever the hell is happening.
ward, unfazed, reaches up into a cabinet, searching for something. âhey, sar, rafe,â he calls, his voice even. âcan you two set up the movie and let rose and wheezie know to be downstairs in . . .â he pauses mid-sentence, then glances toward you as if waiting for confirmation on a time.
you shrug slightly, guestimating. âfifteen minutes?â
ward nods, turning back to his kids. âfifteen minutes,â he repeats, and with that, he resumes rummaging through the cabinet for the right bowls.
sarah takes a step back first, but not before glancing at rafe, her expression absolutely gloating. she doesnât say anything, but the way she tilts her head, the way her brows lift slightly, itâs enough to tell him, this is happening.
rafe exhales sharply, shakes his head in disbelief, and finally turns toward the living room, muttering something under his breath about how this is going to take some getting used to.
and just like that, the dynamic shifts. for the first time since youâve been here, something feels different. maybe even . . . right.
