Man! Reading this bums me out. Shadowrun is dark, but not so dark that it's impossible to do the right thing.
Yeah, I love me some Shadowrun. I even ran the 4th Edition missions for a little over a year. It just seems to appeal to a disproportionate amount of grimdark murder hobos. I’ve had friends tell me that they would never play in a Shadowrun campaign I didn’t GM.
I’m meeting up with a PUG this weekend that’s about to start a new Shadowrun campaign. I really hope it goes well, but honestly, I’m pretty skeptical.
Get updates on DOJO the card game here.
Dear StrMod and DOJO supporters: The DOJO Kickstarter effort was unsuccessful, and we’re OK with that. We hope you are too.
During our freshman experience with design and crowdfunding efforts, we learned much. Murphy’s Law applies to everything, no matter how well planned. Our efforts(delightfully!) received global notice, and therefore we should have worldwide shipping options from day one. Amongst other things, people can be surprisingly generous both monetarily and with their time and knowledge.
During the promotional run, I met and corresponded with tons of great people whom I may not have otherwise come into contact with. I’ve made some personal friends as well as made some connections with industry folks who’ve offered their expertise on this and future efforts.
Throughout the process and discussions amongst the DOJO team, we’ve strengthened our resolve and methods to produce great gaming material here at StrMod.
I’m happy to announce that DOJO will not go the way of Atari’s “E.T.”
Since we were not initially successful in funding, the process will be slower and largely self-backed. However, we can still involve you in the process. You can always contact StrMod through the normal means(Facebook, tumblr, or plain old email), but additionally we’ve setup a dedicated space on our website for DOJO updates and feedback, here.
We’ll be taking time to apply some suggestions for improvement, finishing more great art, furthering the plan for print logistics, and testing so we can wind up with a great final product.
Expect a second Kickstarter effort following that work. We’ll still need to know how many games to make, and we’ll have some new rewards up for grabs! A lower monetary goal will make getting funded much more achievable. We’ll also be able to deliver more quickly since we’ll be closer to a final product.
In the meantime, StrMod efforts are expanding to include a second gaming project. Details are forthcoming, but just know that it will be “our thing”, capisce?
Thank you for all your help in this process, past and future.

A long time ago, in a galaxy right here
It feels like it has been a lifetime since I asked corruptionpoints for some advice on what to run for usmelinuk‘s nieces - one 10 and the other 13.
We settled on running FFG’s Star Wars: Edge of the Empire - they’re both Star Wars fans, one is more of an obsessive than a fan.
Plans where made and fell apart, people were ill, but finally we managed to get together.
- A Twi’lek Smuggerl/Thief played by the eldest; she’s somewhat shy but is already getting into her character and role.
- A second Twi’lek - that caused one or two arguments - Explorer/Fringer played by the youngest of the two. She dove straight into the game and was in character before we’d finished the introduction. She also took ‘Bounty’ as her Obligation and was horrified to learn her favourite aunt was rolling up a Bounty Hunter.
- A Chiss Bounty Hunter/Gadgeteer played by usmelinuk to help them out.
We’re running through the Debts to Pay, Game Master’s Kit adventure which involves helping out Bargos the Hutt recover some credits.
So far, the Fringer has managed to nearly start a fight by insulting Bargos the Hutt, told off his majordomo for lying to her as she “Didn’t spend all this time studying Xenology to be lied to. I know exactly what I’m talking about!”. Finally, she tried to persuade the other Twi’lek to help her out so she could avoid being captured by the Bounty Hunter.
The Thief - as mentioned - started off a little shy but warmed up a fair amount; at one point she threatened the Toydarian majordomo by jabbing a blaster pistol into his face and then went onto try to blackmail the fluttering pest.
Without going into any more adventure spoilers, we wrapped up the session part way through and will hopefully finish it off next time they’re round.
They both seem to enjoy it - the whole “five more minutes, pleeeeeeaaaaaassssseeeee!!!”
It was a lot of fun to run for them and I’m looking forward to playing another time.

"Favouritism"
In the earlier post about men talking over women PCs in tabletop roleplaying games (mostly D&D), I noticed a lot of people who were part of groups that their boyfriend ran, and saying how they couldn't go to the DM for help because it would look like the DM was playing favourites.
But here's the thing: your DM is supposed to be your advocate. They are supposed to be the person that ANYONE in the group can ask assistance from. The DM is supposed to make every player their favourite player and listen to their concerns, as well as come up with actual, viable solutions to those concerns. If your DM won't do that for you just because you're their girlfriend, they're a shitty DM. Maybe a shitty boyfriend too.
Nobody ever accused me of playing favourites with my boyfriend (long time PC) when I run games (long time DM), even when I specifically tailored to his interests.
