R-R-Reaching Out
RR hovered near Digger’s shoulder, staring up at the tower looming. Digger himself was busy looking Lixen over, careful to not touch her in her weakened state (and because he wasn’t entirely convinced that he wouldn’t get corrupted from physical contact). “This is bad,” the shell muttered, tilting his head a little to catch RR in his periphery. “RR, can you still open portals? We need to get everybody out of here that isn’t fighting-- ...RR?”
The orange shape glowed a brilliant bluish-white, shedding triangle-shaped motes of light, as he shapeshifted. Digger stood up as RR’s paws touched the ground and his expression hardened. The markings on his back glowed. Digger swiftly ducked as glowing white chains shot out of RR’s back, forming link by link, before terminating in a large pair of industrial clamps larger than Digger’s head.
“Um... RR?”
It was unusual for the shape to be this quiet. Now that Digger thought about it, he hadn’t said a word since the failed noise attack. Maybe he’d been hit with the sensory overload? It had been pretty overwhelming for him and he wasn’t even a music-based creature like RR was, although the tower had shrugged it off... and that didn’t explain why RR had left shape form.
RR started humming, and Digger took a step away. He could feel the charge of energy in the air around him, like static electricity, as RR’s song grew louder. The flickering glow of his triangle stabilized and then intensified like a beacon. Digger heard the words in his head at the same time RR said them-- “Rainbow Road!”-- and in an explosion of light and sound RR blasted his way through the barrier Theo had put up to keep them safe and soared up into the sky towards the tower.
Rainbow-coloured bullets appeared in a ring around the shape before firing off into beams of light that collided into the drone doors like a meteor shower. RR unleashed a full salvo, beams striking in sync with the melody while comets pummeled the tower in time with the drums, the music emanating from him struggling to override Shaping the New World. Yet... it didn’t look to be enough. The tune died down, and Digger held his breath, afraid of what might happen.
“Ignition...”
Digger’s eyes widened. RR was powering up again, shafts of bluish-white light radiating out from him with more of the triangle particle effects, as the triangle glowed brighter.
“RR, NO!!”
The multicolour beam fired with a shockwave of light that lit up the sky for a brief second. For a moment RR’s form changed, his bandanna extending into a scarf and a halo of triangles circling his head, but then it flickered away like a dying light as the beam faded. Digger pulled out his rapier and started running, feeling his own song pounding in his head, but he could see the tiny orange speck that was RR start to fall.
