Both, then, both!! I’ll put Rei under a cut ‘cuz I talked too much and basically had too much fun with him…

Nagisa Hazuki:

Why I like them: Honestly, I didn’t quite like him at first, for rather forgettable and shallow reasons. (Basically I was jealous of him for having such a hot/perfect/unfairly attractive BF/F like Rei Ryugazaki. Some people have all the luck.) But I started liking him a hell of a lot after writing in his POV for Leverage Effect - he’s a fun guy, but way more than what he just seems at the surface, and we both have a innate love for weird food combinations, which gives him another point in my book!

Why I don’t: „,while I do do weird things like dip chocolate cake in patis (fish sauce), please refrain from the excessive protein powder usage, Nagisa-kun.

Favorite episode (scene if movie): From s1, episode 3. From ES…also ep3, especially the part where he just clings to Rei. Also ep5, where he confesses his true feelings about Rei - I mean, about swimming, ahaha, I kid. I also like each and every scene where he does impressions of his friends.

Favorite season/movie: I like how his character eventually developed in ES, so yeah, ES.

Favorite line: ”I won’t run away anymore!" (ES 5)

OTP: Reigisa, obviously. Also NagiGou, very rarely, on occasion.

Important Friends: Mako, Haru, Rin. I also like his budding friendship with Ai!

Head Canon: He actually knows how to cook, but prefers that nobody know about it because he doesn’t have much confidence in his skills in comparison to Haru and Rei. I think I vaguely touched upon this in Materiality, once.

Unpopular opinion: I know I’ve never written his POV like this, but - I think that in his head, he calls all his friends by yobisute. He tacks on the -chan honorific when speaking so he won’t seem as if he’s be too ‘feeling close’ or whatever.

A wish: Please let him and Rei get married when they’re older. Well…I wish his grades get better! (That’d give him more time with his Rei-chan, haha.)

My nickname for them: In my head I tend to think of him as “Pororo”, ever since a little parallel I had him draw in Materiality Principle.

when or if I started shipping it: I don’t actually remember; I really want to say from the moment they met, but it probably took a while to hit me. I know I was definitely shipping it by sometime in episode 5, because I laughed at Nagisa saying he would rather sleep with Haru than Rei.

my thoughts: Wow, that’s really open ended. Basically, I think they’re perfect. I keep thinking I’m going to get over them but I never do. It’s becoming a problem. 

What makes me happy about them: They both are super adorable alone, and together they’re even more amazing. You know, in one of those the whole is greater than the sum of its parts type deal. And over the course of the show you can really see them come to rely on each other. Like, at the beginning, it seems Rei has no social life (at any rate, we don’t see him talk to anyone besides his coach) and Nagisa just has Haru and Mako, but now they have each other (and Gou and the Samezuka team).

What makes me sad about them: I’m not sure either of them realize their own feelings, much less each other’s. Also, I think they would both be really lonely without each other. Like I already mentioned, it doesn’t seem like they had many friends before starting the team. 

Things done in fanfic that annoy me: When they say Rei is older. First of all, they are so close in age that it shouldn’t matter. But, if you do want to bring it up, Nagisa is slightly older. 

Things I look for in fanfic: I don’t know. Basically just the two of them being dorks together. I usually avoid AUs and I like established relationships, but stories where they sort of just start dating are cute, too. 

My kinks: Oh wow it went there. Um I really like it when Rei tries to play it all cool but then ends up like losing control—getting really loud, begging, whatever. Nagisa doing all sorts of “innocent” things to make Rei think of sex—suggestively licking a popsicle, asking what type of book it is that boys keep under their bed (you know, canon things). And I like it when Nagisa takes charge. Not necessarily, like, full BDSM or anything, but when he is in control. 

Who I’d be comfortable with them ending up with, if not each other: I can’t really see Rei with anyone else in the show. Like, I imagine he would end up with someone from track or school, or, more likely, someone he meets at university. But, if I had to pick someone from the show, I guess RinRei is cute. I think that if Nagisa and Rei weren’t together, Nagisa and Gou might date for a bit—not because I think they are attracted to each other but because I imagine it would be like, “well, we are both single and we are a boy and a girl who are friends, so let’s try this boyfriend/girlfriend thing.” But that would be short-lived. For something more long term… I could see him with Ai. And that would work out because if I have to break up Rintori for RinRei, then I need to find someone for Nitori.
