I’ve been thinking about how Lara seems to be the type to use religion to exert power over Sean.
In songs like “In Favor of You”, “Divine Intervention”, and “For the Better”, there is a ton of religious language used like “blessed”, “saint”, “divine”, and “glory”. And with Void wanting to be Sean’s god, it seems that in their relationship, Lara was so obsessive over Sean that she wanted to be worshipped by him and demanded all his time and attention.
And since Sean came from a background where his parents discouraged religious practices, he doesn’t know that what Lara veiled as “respecting religion” was closer to manipulation and psychological abuse than genuine religion. She used his inexperience to create a religion where she was his god.
In “In Favor of You” she goes “And all that you did, I couldn’t forgive” and it just reeks of “I dictate whether or not you go to heaven and you’ll have to answer to me so do as I say”
Hence why Sean’s hesitance towards religion makes sense as well, as someone who was victimized by a distorted view of it wouldn’t want to think about what religion actually is or how he was misled (until he became closer to his crew, where their actions and discussions on theology between themselves were able to open his mind to it a bit more)
