Copyclams are an interesting species of Darkner for many reasons. Part of that is how they can be found in almost any Dark World (with both an object and data subspecies), part of it is their physical and vocal mimicry, and part of it is their parasitic lifecycle.

Copyclams are about 1 meter or 3 feet tall in height, including their siphons and split foot. Their skin is squishy with a faux sliminess to it, and always is some hue of off white in color. Their bodies are circular in shape and vertically flattened. Two pairs of tendrils at their sides allow for grasping and crawling. Their mouth has a scraping radula, and is colored by their blue blood.

Unusually for mollusks, copyclams lack a shell, at least not the same sort of shell as their bivalve kin. They produce sorts of false bodies that resemble other Darkners in shape. These shells are controlled from within by the copyclams. The copyclams can

In addition to physical mimicry, copyclams also exhibit vocal mimicry similar to certain birds. This can sometimes lead to speech interruptions/tics for individuals.

Copyclams exhibit two separate types of parasitism through their lifecycle. Copyclam eggs, or pipis as they’re called, resemble various foods, usually those found in nature. Often they specifically resemble the diet of the most common Darkner in the given area, whether that be gemstones for Rudinns or Dark Dollars for Addisons, for example.

This tricks the host Darkner into consuming the pipis, which will hatch inside their host’s stomach. For the first few months of their life, the hatchling copyclam will learn vocal mimicry from the voice of the host and nearby Darkners.

Around a season later, the copyclam will emerge from the host’s mouth. Usually this is in a peaceful manner while the host is asleep, but there are instances where a larval copyclam stays too long and ends up tearing at its host from the inside, which either results in the host coughing it out, or the copyclam eating its host from the inside.

The larval copyclam will then make a shell imitating their host’s species over the next week, and then try to find someone, ideally their host, to raise them.

Copyclam magic manifests as faulty replicas of their host species’s magic, and being able to summon mini versions of themselves.
