In the past I have rarely succeeded at making cookies with cookie cutters. Not so with these! They’re the easiest! They aren’t sticky at all and are really forgiving – if they crack you can push them back together, you can roll the dough up and re-cut it over and over and the dog never complains about the overworked texture. For these reasons, since they maintain their shapes really well and can thus be decorated with any number of children’s fastidiously-drawn-on smiles and freckles and other things, and since they don’t have any sugar in them they’re amazing to make with kids.

Ingredients:

2 cups whole wheat flour

1 cup toasted wheat germ

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

3/4 cup of water

1/4 cup peanut butter

1 large egg, room temperature

2 tablespoons grapeseed* (or other healthy) oil

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350º F

Combine flour, wheat germ, and cinnamon in one bowl. Combine water, peanut butter, the egg, and oil in another bowl. Stir the dry ingredients into the wet.

On a floured surface roll the dough to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut with cookie cutters or simply cut lengthwise and crosswise with a pizza cutter or knife to make tiny, training treats.

Place on ungreased baking sheet and bake about 20-30 minutes per side. They will get a little browner on their edges and possibly crack when they should be flipped. When the second side gets a little brown on the edges or (possibly) cracks, they are done.

Cool on a rack and store in an airtight container.
