LEVEL FOUR - PROJECT TWO

Artist research Jan Kowalewicz:

Architect and artist Jan Kowalewicz is a Polish male artist who currently lives in Warsaw. Kowalewicz was born in Kerala, Ottapalam in India on 2nd of February 1983. Kowalewicz uses just a cross hatching and hatching technique to achieve depth and tone to their work, they used widely spaced lines to stop there from being larger areas left blank. I think that Kowalewicz’s technique is unique to other cross hatching techniques because there are barely any single lines to show shapes and body parts, almost all the piece is made up of cross hatching and hatching.

Manda Wolfe

Manda Wolfe is a 29-year-old, Southern California based artist that is best known for her illustrations of animals painted in gouache on paper with also watercolour. She uses gouache as she believes that it has a “illustrative” quality to it and the fact that it is so opaque. She was born in California where she also works now.

People to this day believe that this man has changed the course of Art history. After researching him, i have come to the conclusion that he was a rebel in the art world. He did not create anything by the rules, in fact he did everything against the rules, deliberately. He insisted that art should be driven by ideas above all. He is generally considered the father of Conceptual art. His refusal to go down a conventional artistic path, caused him to produce a very small amount of work in a rather short career, which caused him to leave the art world behind him. 

One of his most famous works is ‘Fountain’ (1917), which was nothing but a urinal, turned upside down - another act of not going by the rules of art.

Paul Klee

Klee is a Swiss born painter, print maker and draftsman. He is originally associated with the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter and he was taught at the Bauhus. 

Klee’s has such a wide and diverse range of work that it cannot be categorized into a single art movement, like most artists are. His work was very highly appreciated in that day, so much so that the New York School was inspired by his work. 

He was a musician most of his life, and held just as much passion in paintings, as he did in his music, He often used to mix the two or compare the two. He saw analogies between music and visual art. One of his most famous works is ‘Affected Place’ (1922). 

Juan Gris (1887 - 1927)

Gris is a Spanish sculptor and cubist painter. He was largely influenced by Picasso and Braque’s cubism movement and work that he followed in the footsteps. In doing so he made a very good impression and a very good reputation, so much so, that he was one of Gertrude Steins favorite artists. 

He is the only artist talented enough to have made Picasso uncomfortable. Although he was so inspired by his work, that’s all he was - inspired. He didn’t copy, as many artists had done, in fact he steered the movement into different directions and that is what made his work so different from everyone else’s and his own. His work is very easily distinguished from the inventors of cubism, and it is informed by his backgrounds as an illustrator. It’s with a stick, almost commercial appearance. 

The way Picasso and Braque were destroying the conventions of a painting, Gris’ only aim was for it to be visually attractive. ‘I prefer the emotion that connects the rule’ - words by Gris. 

Salvador Dali

Salvador Dali is a Spanish artist who’s movement was the Surrealist movement. From an early age his artistic abilities were really encouraged and was pushed to practice and develop it further where he would then study at an academy in Madrid. He is best known for his painting of the melting clocks - ‘The persistence of memory’.

When he went Paris he interacted with many different artists including Picasso, Magritte and Miro. Meeting these artists and being influenced by them lead him towards the movement he based his work on - Surrealism.
