She freezes. All it takes is that one comment to throw Marcia off her game. Logically, she knows that her teacher meant nothing by it. God, she really hopes the other people in the class aren’t that familiar with ballet technique. Or didn’t notice. Or just write off the comment. Or… Or it’s too late. Marcia can feel somebody staring at her. She braces for impact and turns to her left to face whoever it is. She locks eyes with Jasmine. Of course, Jasmine— Jasmine, who has to keep reminding their professors that her name is Jasmine and not the one on the roster—is the the one who noticed. Marcia lets out a sigh of relief. She gives the other girl a nod to confirm what she knows she’s thinking. There’s a mutual sense of recognition for a moment. Then, their instructor says something at the front of the room, Jasmine breaks eye contact, and the moment ends. “That could’ve gone worse”, Marcia thinks to herself, and she forgets about it (or tries to) for the time being.
