Buffet of Art Limitations for Creativity Challenge
Perfect limiters to add to drawing challenge prompts or your sketchbook drawings to flex your creative muscles
Colour Limitations
Monochrome (only shades of one colour)
Complementary colours only (e.g., blue + orange)
Analogous colours (three colours next to each other on the colour wheel)
No black or white allowed
Only pastels / only neons
Desaturated colours only
Use exactly 3 colours, no more, no less
Greyscale with one pop of colour
Brush / Tool Limitations
Only one brush type for the entire piece
No blending tools allowed
Only hard edges, no soft brushes
Only use textured brushes (e.g., chalk, pencil, grainy)
Linework only — no shading or colouring
Only shading with crosshatching or stippling
Draw using the eraser as much as the brush (subtracting rather than adding)
No pen pressure sensitivity
Style Constraints
Minimalist / flat shapes only
Hyper-detailed / micro-patterns everywhere
Cartoonified version of the subject
Realistic rendering only
Chiaroscuro (dramatic light/dark contrast)
Only geometric shapes — no organic lines
Loose, sketchy, and messy (no clean lines)
Symmetrical composition
Asymmetrical composition with intentional imbalance
Continuous line drawing (never lifting your pen/stylus)
Silhouette only (no internal detail)
Layout / Composition Limits
Negative space is at least 50% of the image
Off-center subject (rule of thirds)
Cropped — subject goes out of frame
Only draw within a circle, triangle, or other shape frame
Multiple tiny panels instead of one big drawing
Close-up / extreme zoom-in
Draw as if it’s a reflection (mirror image)
Flip the image upside-down halfway through and keep working
Background must be more detailed than the subject
Process Challenges
No undo allowed
Set a timer (e.g., 15 minutes max)
Draw the subject from memory (don’t look at reference after starting)
Swap your dominant hand for your non-dominant
Draw in layers of abstraction — start realistic, get more abstract as you go
Work only in silhouettes first, then add minimal detail
Complete the drawing using only straight lines
