The English quarters were an odd mix of activity and quiet in the days that followed the princess' birth. Though the nursemaids were the most constant of visitors, the ladies of court all flowed in and out, bringing their gifts and fawning on their beautiful queen and her lovely little angel. In fact, so great was the love for the princess that the gifts began to overflow the nursery. Constance, though not known for her sweetness, knew what it was to be swamped in baby items so she found herself helping to organize the new presents. She held up a small dress, full of lace and frills, and remembered when her own daughter had been so small when the door opened and Nazli came in. "I was just thinking that I cannot believe the princess is finally here. Look at all these dresses. She will never have to wear a single dress twice," Constance laughed, hanging the dress and smoothing out the wrinkles.

Constance looked at the beautiful Dutch princess and her eyes flashed; she wanted to be angry at her for the way Valencia was breaking her brother's heart, but her brother had admitted that the marriage was partly his idea. Who then was to blame for the unhappiness when status mattered so much more than love. Constance had spoken with Valencia before she'd known what the princess meant to Alistair, but now, she knew exactly Valencia's reasons for approaching her. This time, Constance was the one to approach. "I hear congratulations are in order Princess Valencia. My brother told me that you are engaged to be married, to the Prussian king no less." Though she smiled at Valencia, she had no way to make it reach her eyes; she could not pretend when her brother felt such pain.

Constance was having a ball at the races, though she had carefully schooled her expression into one of inscrutable serenity as befitted a graceful woman in mourning. Still, there was something about the pounding of the horse hooves and the roar of the crowd that seemed to fill her with excitement. As the horses passed again and the third place horse took a sharp turn, pulling front of the first two contenders, she found herself on her feet before once again noticing that there were others around her, including a familiar face that she had seen around, though she was not exactly sure where. "I apologize, I find myself quite carried away with the excitement of it all despite the fact that I have absolutely no wager on this race. Did you bet anything?"

The news of the escaped former monarchs would have, at one time, brought Alistair right to her door. Even before either of them truly became who they were, they had always loved to discuss secrets. They had known all that happened around them and, since there was really no one else who matched their wits, they had always looked to each other to test their ideas. Constance gave her brother time, a few days in case he was speculating with the King or was helping to plot the search parties, but after that time passed and there was still no sign of him, she got bored and went to find him. When she did, she was almost surprised about what she found.

Alistair was soused, completely off his head with drink. Constance could not remember the last time she had seen him so very disheveled with papers all over his desk and his hair sticking up at all angles. "Christ, Al, what in the high heaven is this?" Constance remarked, stepping over papers to sit on her brother's desk where he was slumped. "You look like shit. What the hell happened? You weren't even this upset when the man came back. What has happened that is utterly unrecoverable and how much do I need to drink to catch up?" Constance, after all, had never beaten Alistair and if she could not beat him, she'd join him.
