CRACK the electric shock from the device strapped to Daisyâs head sent the Six-year-old girl flying backwards. Her small frame hit the wall behind her with such force that it caused the unstable structure to give way. Â As she looked up at the crumbling debris that was falling toward her, it was as if time slowed down. The teenaged boy who had pried the mind control device off Daisyâs head screamed the young girlâs name. It echoed in her head like some distant gunshot.
As the bricks came down around her Daisy wasnât sure what scared her more; The depending death or the fact that soon, very soon, she would be covered in total darkness. She would be trapped. No, death didnât scare her; it was that darkness, that evil entrapment that meant you were utterly alone.
And as these thoughts raced through her head a large body covered her shielding her from the rocks, enveloping her in safety. Yes, it was dark but, the sound of his heart echoing in her ears told her she wasnât alone. And for the first time in her life, even in the dark, Daisy felt safe.
âOh not for long, just long enough till we find out who the big baddie is then we blow this popsicle standâ
Daisy flashed Superboy a large smile. He gave what she assumed a smile in return. She had been more than a little thrilled to be on a recon mission with her idol. However with the laps of silents things were getting awkward.
âYou know⌠you saved me. A long time ago.â
âReally?â he turned to the girl next to him, Sparks. A pyro who was, even now, letting little flames dance around her fingertips as she sat in the corner of the cell. The light from her powers casting weird shadows across her face making it hard to gauge her emotion. Something he had never really been good at anyway.
âYeah, I was one of the kids in the meta lab. The Fire one? You probably donât remember.â
âThey had a mind control device on you that Robin was able to pry off. You were almost crushed.â
She looked at him her face lighting up like the flames in her hand. âYeah, you⌠you were my hero after that.â she chuckled looking away biting her lip debating if she should continue, âYouâre actually kind of the reason I became a hero.â
They both lapsed into silence again. Caught up in their own thoughts. To be honest, Daisy had been thrilled to get this mission. Always watching Connor from afar but never having the confidence to go up and talk to him. He was her hero, the person who had given her the courage to get up and fight. Fight for herself and believe in herself.
And it didnât help that he was so cute.
But he was a lot older than her and she was just a kid.
Until she found out years later that he hadnât aged a day.
And like that, her childhood hero was her partner in one of the best teams around. Even after she had joined the Young Justice though she hadnât really talked to him much until this mission. Daisy be cool, she reminds herself. There this was your one chance to make an impression on your all-time hero.
âSo whatâs up with you and Miss Martian?â it just came out before Daisy could stop them. Fighting to keep her face expressionless as he glanced. Maybe if she tried hard enough he wouldnât see the ulterior motive behind it. The flames sparking slightly in her hand betraying her emotions. âIf you donât mind me asking,â she added flashing him a half smile.
It was weird but at that moment Connor didnât care anymore. He didnât care how he felt like every day he had made a mistake. How he had thought she was the only girl for him. How, in many ways, he still thought that.
I mean, who even was he without her?
Connor blinked as if that simple world brought him back to reality. Then he realized something. He had just said all that out loud.
âIâm sorry,â Sparks said, âIâve never had a⌠well, any relationship at all. But Iâm sorry.â
âItâs not your fault.â he sighed running his fingers through his thick black hair, âSometimes I just pretend we are still together. That sheâs just doing other things when sheâs not with me. Not⌠no with him.â
The darkness didnât last long, only moments really before Superboy burst through the debris with Daisy clinging to him like a monkey. Eyes wide and blinking back shock as she tried to take in everything around her. The boy, Robin, was at their side in an instant. Calmly pulling the small girl off Superboy and helping her to stand on her own.
And Daisy knew, as she looked up at the tall dark haired boy who stared right back at her with those unflinching blue eyes, that she would be ok. And she would always be ok if she knew that this tall strong boy was at her side. Maybe, maybe even the dark wouldnât be as scary.
Daisy woke up in a cold sweat the echoes of her nightmares still spinning around her. She glanced around. The candles she had light before going to bed had gone out and she was sitting in the dark. Pulling out her hand she let the fire flow from her fingertips filling the room with light.
Getting up she walked out of her room through the base. She had to get out. It was as if the base was closing in on her. Crumbling, covering her. She needed to get out. To see the stars.
âIs this seat taken?â
She turned from her perch on the mountainside. Connor landing gently next to her. She shook her head pulling her knees closer to her chest. Her hand still letting the small fire people she had created dance around. Distracting herself letting the light and warmth of her flames pull her away from the all-consuming dark.
âI use to come here too,â Connor said finally breaking the silence, âEven with the huge base I felt trapped. I wanted to be out here under the moon.â
âJust to know you couldâ Daisy added, âJust to know you could get away if you needed to.â
âThat there was a world out thereâ he nodded
You both lapsed back into silence again. But this time it was comfortable. Caught in your own thoughts. And for a moment Daisy closed her eyes and just herself pretend. Pretend that maybe he thought of her the way she thought of him. As someone amazing. As an inspiration.
Conner held Daisyâs hand the whole way out of the lab. The other kids running around her yelling and screaming but Daisy never let go. Clinging to him as he leads her from that dark damp place to the sunlight outside.
âSuperboy!â A pretty green-skinned girl flew toward them taking Conner in a hug before pulling away to kiss him. Connerâs hand dropping Daisyâs
âOh hello,â the girl said looking down at Daisy who looked up at her confused, âWe are going to do everything we can to help you find your family,â she added patting Daisyâs head. Then standing up she took Connerâs hand leading him toward the others.
Daisy frowned as she watched Conner walk away. But she knew this wasnât goodbye, just see you later. She would become like him. Someone who helped others.
She knew she could help people just like he helped her.
It took Daisy forever to work up the courage to ask him. She had backed out so many times Wonder Girl had eventually caught on and basically pushed her toward him. So hard in fact that Daisy had run into Connerâs strong back. Â
âSo⌠there is this lunar eclipse next week, do you want to go see it?â
âOk see you on the Mountainside!â she let out a little laugh at her own little private joke. Anything to try and rid those absurd butterflies in her stomach.
A week quickly passed with Cassie letting Daisy borrow an outfit. Both girls bonding over Daisyâs crush. âGirl why did we never hang out before?â the blonde asked as she handed Daisy some small earrings to finish the outfit.
Daisy shrugged as she looked at herself in the mirror, âIâm glad we are, no matter what happens Iâm glad weâre friends.â
Down the hall, Conner was grabbing his jacket to go meet Daisy. The little pyro had always been kind of shy but he was glad he was getting to know her. They had both been through a lot of the same issues and it was nice to talk to someone like that. Â
Plus she had this way of lighting up any situation that seemed to put him at ease. He was glad they were becoming friends.
âHey Conner,â MâGannâs voice broke his train of thought. âCan⌠can I talk to you?â
Daisy sat quietly on the cliff overlooking the city. The Sun was going to set soon where was Conner? Sparks danced around her fingers as she nervously moved them sending embers into the sky. Like silent orange prayers to the night sky.
As the last of the flecks of sunlight were extinguished, a wave of sadness rushed over her. Maybe he wasnât going to come. I mean why would he? To him, she was probably just that little girl who was scared of the dark.
And maybe she was. Maybe she still was that young girl who clung to the fantasies of becoming a hero. Someone who would fight alongside him. Help him save a million other children like them. Children who needed a light in the darkness.
Daisy had told herself a million times he wouldnât like her like her like that. Like the way she liked him. She told herself that was ok. That just his friendship was enough. But even now, even now as she sat there she felt like the stupid little girl who would make up stories in her head that never came true.
Because the truth was he didnât like her.
She was just playing pretend.
Letting out a cry in frustration Daisy jumped up on her feet letting a ball of fire flow from her hands. Bright hot flames over the ocean lighting up the world around her for just a moment.
Then sitting back down she buried her face in her knees and cried like the idiot girl she was.
Just a silly girl playing pretend.
