      what he’s looking at and what he sees are two entirely different things. harvey kinkle’s eyes seem to be focused on the warlock in front of him, but there’s something blocking his vision. a memory creeps in: the warmth of a gun in sweaty, nervous palms, tears rolling down trembling cheeks, his brother’s face.       ( but not really his brother, because whatever was there wasn’t tommy, not really, it couldn’t have been, because if it had been— )

       A GUNSHOT. light seems to return to his eyes, and recognition registers on his features. nicholas, not tommy.
