The Columbia Fire Department joined by firefighters from across the Midlands recently performed swiftwater training at the Congaree River. Columbia Fire Department's Special Operations Chief, Jason Krusen, explains why this training is so beneficial to the firefighters and the public.

Yesterday I spent the day out on the river behind my apartment with a few friends and my roommate’s puppy, and in case you can’t tell by my facial expression, I was really excited about it (and still am).  There is a nature trail directly behind my building, and if you walk about 5 minutes down it, you’re right at the Congaree River.  From there it’s just a quick wade across part of the river (with my bag balanced on my head to keep it dry) and we were able to lay out on some large, relatively flat rocks.  While we’ve walked the trail with Cooper (the puppy disguised as a mop in the pictures), this was the first time we went out on the river and I can’t believe we haven’t taken advantage of such an awesome and convenient opportunity before now.  It was so much fun exploring what is just one more reason I love my apartment and my city.
