Florida man plotted to blow up Key West beach

A Florida man named Harlem Suarez wanted to place a bomb on the beach at Key West, and had plans for other bombs in different parts of Florida. He was arrested on July 27 after he arrived to pick the bomb from an FBI confidential source.

Not very smart

The FBI ran across Harlem Suarez  in April after a posting  in which he promoted ISIS under the name Almlak Benitez. A person tipped off the  Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office after receiving a friend request from that fake name, and PBSO then contacted the FBI after they reviewed the posts.

The FBI tracked the fake profile back to Suarez’s real name.

According to his Facebook page, he is from Key West.

In one post, he wrote, “I need some emest from any brother. How to make a bomb send me a video or something, and what do I need to make it.”

What? You mean the big,  pro-ISIS bad guy doesn’t know how to make a bomb? Shame.

Wannabe ISIS fighter

The Miami New Times wrote:

An FBI confidential human source located in West Palm Beach (the complaint does not make it totally clear whether it’s the same person who originally tipped off the PBSO) made contact with Suarez, and the suspect divulged his plot to blow up a beach. He allegedly planned to use a weapon known as a “timer bomb,” a device that is filled with nails and able to be concealed easily in a backpack. Suarez planned to bury the bomb under the sand on a public beach and then detonate the device via cell phone.

“We can make it with a phone because if one day I get a day off, I can go to the beach at night time … put the thing in the sand … cover it up. So the next day I just call and the thing gonna, is gonna make … a real hard noise from nowhere, and like people are gonna be like what, where this shit came from,” Suarez said during one phone discussion with the source.

The only “real hard noise” this guy will make is when the prison door slams behind him.

Suarez told the source he had two Glocks, and was also looking to get a rifle, bulletproof vest, and grenades. He also reportedly had plans to go to a mosque in the Miami area to drum up some allies. He talked with the source about putting bombs in Marathon, Florida, and South Beach, but had not yet fully formulated those plans.

Eventually they met face to face. Suarez was dressed in tactical gear- with weapons,  and met up with the “confidential source” at a motel in West Palm Beach. [That screams wannabe, don’t you think?].

The source told him that if he would bring the materials, they’d have someone make the bomb. Suarez provided the materials on July 19, and when he went to pick up the bomb on Monday, he was arrested.

He was charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction within the United States. He faces life in prison.
