"A house in the country". Russell Lea Manor (also known as Russell Lea House), the home of Russell Barton, was situated north of Lyons Road between Sibbick Street and Lyons Road. The house was built between 1878 and 1882. In the early 1920s it was used by the Red Cross as a Nerve Hospital. . Russell Lea Manor was demolished in 1925. The foreground of the picture may have been part of the land holding of William Potter who operated a market garden. . Rhodes Fire Station, 1930. From Captain Greg McIlwaine's collection. In 1914 Charles McIlwaine, who had been a fireman at Darlinghurst, bought land at Rhodes as the site for his family home. He founded the Rhodes Fire Brigade which at first operated with a hand drawn fire hose. . Charles’ son Vic later served as Captain of the Rhodes Fire Station while the position is currently held by his grandson, Captain Greg McIlwaine. . The brass helmets the men are wearing were made locally by Rider & Bell Pty Ltd at Cavell Street, Rhodes. .
