At first, the question had been a joke. Riley didn’t know much of anything about Reid’s past at this point, and certainly nothing of his previous dilaudid addiction. It wasn’t until he fell out of his chair that she realized something was seriously wrong and he wasn’t just tired and falling asleep at work. Most of the others were gone, retreating to the comforts of their homes and families for the night, but Riley, Reid, Hotch, and Garcia hung around, finishing up some things from the last case.
Riley had seen Reid tired, rubbing his eyes, then he left for a bit. Now he was on the floor, Riley grabbing him by the collar of his shirt, shaking him awake. “Reid? What’s going on?” His skin was cold to the touch but small droplets of sweat were forming on his brow, his face was terribly pale. Riley felt his pulse as he sobbed, saying how sorry he was. His pulse was slower than average, but she had no idea of knowing if that was normal for him.
“Help!” She cried out, looking around the bull pen, searching for any trace of Hotch or Garcia. “Hotch, I need you!” The older agent swung his door open, an alarmed look etched on his face. “Something is wrong with Reid.” It was all he needed to hear before he cleared the stairs and raced to the side of his young agent. At first he looked perplexed, then he pulled up Reid’s sleeve, his dark eyes staring, defeated, at the marks on Reid’s arm.
“It’s dilaudid. He’s overdosing. Riley, I’m going to call for help, I need you to stay with him. Keep him awake if you can.” Hotch ordered before bolting out the door.
Riley turned her attention back to Reid, gently rolling him to his side incase he got sick. She pushed his hair back from his face, tucking it gently behind his ear as she leaned over him, his head by her knees, she braced on one arm over him. “Shhh, don’t cry Reid, it’ll only make things worse. You have to stay with me okay? Just stay awake. You just need to stay awake, can you do that?” She asked shakily, trying to make him look at her. A part of her was terrified that something would happen to him, but on the other hand, she was angry at him. The team loved him so much, risked their lives for him, and yet here he was, on the floor of the BAU office, with everything in the world on the line, and a needle mark in his arm.
