In my previous Handwriter's Hack post, I covered page threading. Now let's focus on an even more important notebook element: The Index. . An index is vital for finding entries in a full notebook quickly. It's easy to set up: Number the pages if not pre-numbered. Reserve one to two sheets (2 to 4 pages) in front. Write "INDEX" and info about the notebook's contents at the top. (You may choose not to include this until the notebook is at least half-full.) Draw a dividing line down the center. I divide the page so I have as many writing pages as possible. If you prefer to write each entry on a single line, make sure you set aside enough pages. . I put prominent headers above each entry so it's easy to see what it's about. It also helps when it's time to record my entries in the index. Large headers eliminate the guesswork over when one entry stops and another begins. . To record my entries, I write the page number on the far right of the line. Then I record the title of the entry on the left. I do not include page ranges, since that is what page threading is for. . When the notebook is full, look over your index entries. You may find they fit in different categories. You can color-code each entry by category, and place a category label legend somewhere in your index, so you can locate all your related entries quickly. For example, I have labels for my current WIP, my next WIP, my author platform, and my journal entries. . An index allows you to fill your notebook with whatever wild ideas, musings, plans and outlines come to mind, and still be organized. Link in profile! ❤️❤️❤️ It's a rainy summer afternoon here in Florida, and I am sitting in the middle of a pile of full sketchbooks and journals that I've completed over the years... I am working on a special project that will use a lot of images from my sketchbooks! I have so many of these completed books, and I love looking back through them and remembering just where I came from.
