I just finished watching She’s Gotta Have It on Netflix and by far one of the best scripted representations of what it means to be care free, black and woman through the eyes of the shows lead character Miss Nola Darling. To me Nola embodies the spirit of being unapologetically “you”. She does not let society or even the views of her three lovers depict her and define who she is.Nope only she gets to tell that story. This series touches on so many issues when it comes to black femininity, rape culture, victim blaming/shaming, the objectivification and sexualization of black bodies, poverty/homelessness and the gentrification of NYs neighborhoods.
AND in addition throughout the series there is black cultural tidbits and facts that highlight black/poc influencers of our time. For lack of better words the shit is DOPE AF!!!!NOT TO MENTION THE MUSIC!!!!!
The series really captures and embodies that it means to truly--- find, live, evolve and love YOU!!! and LIVE IN YOUR OWN TRUTH!!!!
