“See I always knew it.”
“Knew what mom,” her daughter indulges her. Karen loves to be right, must have been where Nancy got that trait from.
“Knew Steve would be a great dad and husband.” It goes unsaid but the bittersweet look in Karen Wheeler’s eyes tells it all as she settles into her lounger pulling out a coke from her bag. She wishes she had had the wisdom to choose right for herself once upon a time.
“Oh yeah?” Nancy teases her sitting as well, “That wasn’t the impression you gave me when you first met Steve.”
“Nancy you were 16 and 17! I wasn’t judging him based on his ability to be a good father back then. Quite the opposite I was judging him on his ability to keep his hands to himself. Based on all the times you came home in his clothes, he wasn’t particularly good that that.” Karen seems amused by how far they have come.
“Still isn’t,” Nancy blurts out. She expects her mom to be scandalized by her brazen comment but Karen surprises her with a twinkle in her eyes, “Good for you.” Mother and daughter lock eyes for a moment before dissolving into uncontrollable laughter.
