His mother is a Vulcan, and his father is a Human. He was raised on Earth, and self-identifies as Human, but bullied for his Vulcan heritage. The other kids believed he was simply faking his emotions to fit in, but was actually cold, calculating, and uncaring. On Earth, he was always viewed as a Vulcan among Humans. 

He applies to Starfleet as a ship's counselor, and the people reviewing his application gave him a glowing review, but also remarked that he had a fantastic grasp on human emotions "for a Vulcan." He angrily tells them off and storms out, and eventually lands himself a job as the Human liason on a Vulcan science ship. This is the first place where he's ever been viewed as a Human. 

There's one Vulcan there, though, who's always trying to prove he's just as Vulcan as the rest of them, smugly commenting on every single time he reacts logically or expresses less than the appropriate amount of emotion. This is the ship's doctor, Opposite-McCoy. 

He also befriends the ship's captain, a by-the-book Vulcan officer who depends on Anti-Spock's human impulsivity and passion to break the mold and be a better captain. This is Bizarro-Kirk.
