Had to make another grocery store run today and I'm tired, y'all. My bangs are long, I can't get rid of that quarantine acne on my left cheek, and I'm tired. I will wait as long as is needed to keep my community safe but, yo . . . your girl is dragging.

Letâs talk about masculinity. Not the distorted version that gets thrown around in debates about âtoxicity,â but the real thingâthe kind of masculinity that uplifts, protects, and builds.
For too long, masculinity has been misunderstood, demonized, and blamed for societal problems that it didnât create. And in the Black community, this misunderstanding has been weaponized against us.
Masculinity Isnât the Enemy
True masculinity isnât about oppression or control. Itâs about:
⢠Leadership: Taking responsibility for your family and community.
⢠Protection: Being a shield for those you loveâphysically, emotionally, and spiritually.
⢠Stability: Providing strength and consistency in a world that often feels chaotic.
When did these values become something to hate?
The Real Problem is Division
Letâs be real: Black men and women are not each otherâs enemies. The system we live in wants us divided because unity between us is a threat to white supremacy.
⢠The breakdown of the Black family wasnât an accidentâit was engineered through systemic racism, mass incarceration, and economic sabotage.
⢠The constant portrayal of Black men as violent, irresponsible, or unemotional? Thatâs propaganda designed to weaken us as a collective.
And now? Weâre arguing over whether masculinity itself is harmful when the truth is: the lack of positive masculinity is whatâs hurting us most.
What Masculinity Really Looks Like
Itâs time to reclaim what masculinity meansâbecause itâs not what society tells you it is. Real masculinity looks like:
⢠Raising your kids with love and discipline.
⢠Standing up for your community when no one else will.
⢠Treating your partner with respect while leading with strength and compassion.
⢠Being emotionally intelligent and in controlânot suppressing emotions but mastering them.
This isnât âtoxic.â This is what builds families, stabilizes communities, and creates legacies.
Stop Letting Them Divide Us
Black men are not oppressing Black womenâand we never have been on any systemic level. Both Black men and women have been oppressed by the same system designed to keep us at odds with each other.
The truth? We need each other more than ever. Masculinity isnât something to be feared or torn downâitâs something to be celebrated when itâs rooted in love, respect, and accountability.
A Call to Action
To my brothers: Be the example of what real masculinity looks like. Lead with integrity, protect with strength, and build with purpose. Donât let anyone tell you that being a man is inherently harmfulâitâs not.
To my sisters: Understand that masculinity isnât your enemyâtoxic systems are. When we work together instead of tearing each other down, weâre unstoppable.
Letâs stop blaming each other for problems we didnât create and start building solutions together.
gotta buy laundry soda and shoutout to ace hardware bc while theirâs is slightly more expensive, they both price match AND are keeping their DEI program so in the power of purchase I get to avoid the only other options of walfart and low*âs who rolled theirâs back almost immediately.
If youâre looking up a product online, itâs only a few extra clicks to do your research on what company youâre purchasing from and what you want to support. And most larger corporations will price match their competitors because theyâd rather do that and keep a customer than not (donât forget though that it has to be the exact same product.
