spirits help us
starter for @commaxder
When Lin was a young girl, she came to the realization that there were things in this world that simply w e r e. There were people and places tied together by indivisible strings that refused to be snipped away and retied somewhere else. It was something she’d accepted then, but now, she rebelled against it. Lin was determined to break away from the strings of fate and to forge her own. However, she was starting to believe that the spirits simply weren’t going to allow her.
The terrorist group had attacked before. Lin was no stranger to them. Their first attack in Republic City had been almost a month ago. It was an intricately planned attack on a bank. There was no money taken, only injury to the citizens. Lin had been one of the first officers on the scene, aiding the rescue and recovery team with her bending. The group hadn’t struck again, and until the Republic City Police Force had received the message from the United Forces, they hadn’t even realized that the group was responsible for the attack. They’d been under the impression that it was a new tactic of the local gangs. However, as soon as the UF had caught wind of the situation, they were quick to inform and correct Republic City’s assumption. Apparently they’d tracked the group to the city, and now had the solid proof that the group was indeed there. As a young officer rising through the ranks, Lieutenant Lin Beifong was appointed to personally oversee the efforts to apprehend and arrest the leader of the group.
She waited on the docks of Republic City, arms crossed as she watched the ships pull in. When she saw Bumi walk off that ship, she felt the familiar tug of fate. It seemed that no matter how hard she tried, she would be unable to escape this family. Her expression hardened, her hands dropping to clasp behind her back. Lin had met the young man many times before. When they were growing up, she could recall traveling to Republic City with her mother and meeting with the Avatar’s family. Lin didn’t know Bumi as well as she knew Tenzin, but his arrival was surely orchestrated by some other-worldly being. She’d been trying so hard to distance herself as far away from Tenzin as she possibly could after the Incident on Air Temple Island. Perhaps it was some cruel twist of fate, a bit of revenge for trying to tear away those strings, that Bumi was here now. Regardless of her personal history with the family, Bumi and she were here for business. Lin didn’t doubt that he was a perfectly capable commander.
When he was close enough she bowed her head slightly. “Commander Bumi. Welcome to Republic City.” Lin straightened, the perfect picture of discipline. “There’s a car waiting. We’ve got a room set aside in headquarters to collect information and discuss the group. My chief would like to meet with you before we get this underway.” Lin preferred getting down to business and avoiding the pleasantries. Her softer edges had vanished with the appearance of Tenzin in her life.

Aang wasn’t sure how long he had been asleep, but it felt like another hundred years had gone by without his knowing. His eyes ached from the strain of lifting them and every part of his body felt heavy and sluggish. He couldn’t quite locate his arms to lift them and instead felt the strangest sensation twitch in his fingers like a heartbeat from the effort. His chest felt weighed down, like it had been filled with sand. He tried to take a breath and the effort burned.
When he wedged his eyes open, everything seemed fuzzed with a shocking brightness he couldn’t blink away. There was a figure looking over his bed. A person. He winced and tried to focus. Aang thought he recognized the person, but he looked thirty twenty years too young, like he had just slipped back through time.
“Sokka?”
His voice cut like tin. It woke him. Sokka was not the figure. Sokka was old, too old. Aang was not in the past, he was at Air Temple Island, in his bed, where he had been for days.
“Bumi,” he corrected himself with a breath. “You’re here.”
He tried to smile.
