(Save this for the last command please!) Now, CONFESS EVERYTHING to Joey! (You evil noodle!)
âJ-Joey?â Mandaâs voice was almost too quiet for the grenadier to pick up over his attempts at repairing the breakroomâs coffee machine. Hightower poked his head up, powdered coffee mix browning the tips of his neon-pink hair. His eyes widened when he saw Mandaâs sad expression.Â
âManda?â Joe crossed the breakroom in a couple strides to look over her with concern, Rogueâs wrench still in hand. âAre you all right? Whatâs the matter?â
âIâm sorry-â she whimpered, feeling his arms pull her close into an embrace. âIâve messed so many things up today, for you and- and for everyone else on the ship.â
âHey,â he rubbed a circle against her back. âYou donât need to worry about that.â He set his chin on the top of her head. âI was just wondering what had you acting so strangelyâŚâ
She sniffled, âI lost a bet and had to test out this thing.â She drew back to reveal the collar to him, tears in her eyes. âI- I have to obey six commands before the restraints will unlock.â
Joeâs brow furrowed, kneeling down and gripping her arms tightly. âNo one- did anything to you... did they?â His expression was torn between concern and anger looking up to meet her eyes.
âNo! No I...â she gulped, shaking her head. âI was very lucky on that matter- I shouldâve thought things through a lot more and Iâm sorry. Iâm so sorry.â
âWell, what did it make you do?â
Manda took a deep breath, feeling the shame of her actions. âI slacked off on my work shift just... well, just taking care of Cat-Tower.â She wiped her eyes. âI had to steal from the girls... and from Rascal.â
Hightowerâs eyes widened at that. âWait what did you take from them?â
Manda sniffled, opening her bag. âA bunch of things from the girlâs barracks... and I had to try stealing Rascalâs glasses.â
He raised his eyebrows, âwhich Iâm guessing you werenât successful at?â
Manda gave him a watery laugh. âNo... I wasnât for that.â She motioned to the wrench in his hand. âThatâs Rogueâs by the way.â
âWHAT?!â Joe yelped, nearly tossing aside the tool. âYou gave me Rogueâs wrench?! Are you crazy? If she found out-â
âI know, and I wouldâve totally explained it to you at the time but... well...â
âIt was another command?â Joe grimaced. Manda simply nodded in response. The soldier let out a sigh. âOkay so thatâs what- four of the commands?â He met her eyes. âWhat about the other two?â
Manda looked away, still feeling the Psionic influence compelling her to keep going. âI uh- I had to sabotage the Avengerâs engines. But Rex stopped me before I could do any damage to the power generators.â
âThatâs- wow... How did he stop you?â Joe gave her another once-over to make sure the former ADVENT Captain hadnât harmed his precious girlfriend.
âI guess... thereâs a couple words that stop the current command besides completing it.â She shrugged. âLike âstopâ or âenoughâ.â
âOkay,â Joe placed his hand on her cheek, turning her so she would face him properly. âAnd what about the last command?â
Mandaâs lips trembled, struggling to hold back tears. âI- I had to admit everything to you, Joey.â Her breath hitched. âP-please forgive me!â
âHey...â Joe pulled her into a hug. âOf course I forgive you, Manda...â He sighed, âthis collar thing forced you to do things that youâd never do.â He pressed a kiss to her cheek. âI know youâre not a traitor. Not a thief or liar. And definitely not a slacker.â He chuckled, drawing back to gently brush away her tears. âIâm just glad that youâre all right, Manda.â
Manda buried her face in the crook of Hightowerâs neck, sobbing and trembling with emotion. His arms instinctively wrapped around her, caressing her back and waiting as long as she needed.Â
The tiny recruit could feel the Psionic influence lifting from her -once and for all- like a weight off her chest. The collar unlocked with a ping, prompting her to draw away from the embrace to catch it.
She placed the collar into her bag, motioning to the wrench. âGuess I-â she took a breath. âIâd better get this stuff back where it belongs.â
âIâll go with you.â He tugged at her wrist before she could turn away. âIn case that thing acts up or... in case you need help explaining what happened.â He got to his feet with a grunt, his expression turning dark. âAnd besides... whoever put this thing on you-â
âJoey, please.â Manda placed a hand on his chest. âI know what I did was misguided...â She took a deep breath. âBut this whole thing was never with malicious intent. I promise you.â
âStill...â he pouted, âwhoeverâs in charge of this experiment deserves a piece of my mind!â
Manda sighed, but a smile crossed her face. âOkay... but help me return all of these first?â She hoped that would at least help him cool his temper.
Joe nodded, pulling Manda into one last hug before they made their way out of the breakroom hand-in-hand.
âYou know...â Joe brushed some of the powdered coffee mix from his hair with his free hand. âI really think that I was making some progress on that coffee machine.â
âWell, you certainly smell like a big cuppa Joe.â Manda paused and then snorted at the play on words.
Hightower groaned but smiled. âGood to see that youâre back to normal. Nerd.â
