The storm had gotten bad so quickly. One minute, Luke had been driving home from school with the radio playing softly, fingers drumming against the steering wheel as rain pattered against the windshield. The next, the sky had turned nearly black. Wind buffeted his truck hard enough to make him tighten his grip, wipers struggling to keep up with the sheets of rain. "Come on, come on…" he muttered under his breath, peering through the blur ahead. Home wasn't much farther. If he could just make it another few miles…
The world exploded with a deafening crack. Something dark slammed into the windshield, shattering glass in a spray across his lap. A mailbox. An entire mailbox. Luke yelped in surprise, jerking the wheel on instinct. The tires lost traction immediately. The truck skidded sideways across the slick pavement before careening off the road and plunging into the ditch with a violent jolt. Everything went still save for the roar of the storm outside. Heart hammering, Luke sucked in a shaky breath and tried turning the key. The engine sputtered uselessly. He looked up through the spiderweb of broken glass just as another flash of lightning illuminated the empty country road and the downed power line lying several yards ahead, sparks dancing in the rain. Suddenly, being stranded out here felt a whole lot more dangerous than he'd first realized.
