Very proud of my distance management and nachreisen for this exchange. (That's me in the black and white poofy kit) I got smoked out of pools but seeing my fencing improve compared to last year is night and day. :)

I'm going to armor nerd out here for a moment. This bascinet was used by one of my opponents at the Combat Con armor tournament and it has this really cool piece below the visor. As he put it, this is a transitional bevor.
This solves a lot of issues regarding 6-1 chainmail aventails as plate is much more protective to the throat whereas chainmail can very easily grab a sword point or spear point.
He did the work custom by making two rivet holes and shaping the single mild steel pieces so it sits right below the chin thus reflecting any shots to the throat and it still has the aventails below it.
I love seeing the transitional ingenuity added to kits and this is a precursor to a great bascinet where the bevor would be attached directly to the helmet but loses some neck dexterity in the process.
I need to find some more historical references of this myself but it goes to show how punk rock armor designs were and how blacksmiths and knights were always trying new things similar to what buhurt/HEMA armor fighters do to see what is most effective for breathing, mobility, and protection.
“It’s okay to crave violence.” “I do crave violence.”
Need to be good enough to go to big tournaments so I can meet all the hema tumblr people that I never talk to bc I'm new here LMAO it snuck up on me otherwise I may have tried to go, I think this would've been fantastic to meet people at and participate aaa
Oh fuck yeah, buddy got a video of me doing Messer with the only guy in my pool actually doing German/Lecküchner Messer

CombatCon highlights:
Just being around fuckin swords all day hell yeah
Meeting cool people and fighting them, genuinely very friendly and inviting community. I have a lot of social anxiety and everyone I met was hella chill
Working the event, volunteering, and tabling tournaments
Doing better than expected in said tournaments
Forgetting to eat all day until the afternoon and also forgetting that no food was allowed on the convention floor and power-scarfing an entire scalding personal pizza hunched over a hotel garbage can in mere minutes before sprinting to a tournament
Handing out the prizes and seeing how happy people were to win
Made it to elims for Messer and Longsword. Guy who knocked me out of longsword went to gold and goddamn he was a thrust master.
Coincidentally, the guy who got me out of Messer used it like a chunky rapier too smh.
Dealing with thrusting with Messer and longsword is going to be the next hyper fixation.
Still hella fun event. My club got some metals and we completely wiped armor for gold, silver, and bronze.
Happy to be coming home with another armor medal.
