Music Industry - Don’t Pirate this Free Album 

Trent Reznor (pictured above) was considered a rebel and an outcast at the beginning of his music career, but now he is reveled as a founding father of alternative music distribution. One which had created an wave of change that eventually cascaded leaving an entire new genre and movement dubbed alternative. 

With artist giving away “free” albums, a person is more likely to download it and previous and future work from the artist. 

1. Value or worth is contextual. - One mans junk is another mans treasure. Also sentimental family heirlooms may be worthless.

2. Older material has value in an increasingly retro market. Older archived content is gaining increased value, as we romanticize about the past, and try to remind ourselves of our childhood.

3. Media can be appropriated in a two way channel. UGC can be appropriated by main stream media, and main stream media can be appropriated by users, and be re-purposed.

4. Cultural transmission plays a role in old shows getting re-dos and revamped for new audiences, like Scooby Doo, and even the Batman franchise.

 In 1895, a young hat maker named Cassel Goorin started selling his wares off a horse cart in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Millinery (hat making) at the turn of the century was one of the most prestigious crafts. Hats and who made them defined who you were and what you did, but that is not to say hats were little more than a status symbol. Wool watch caps have kept our armed forces’ heads dry for over a century, while straw hats have provided shade for the masses for twice as long.  

Hats in various styles have captivated us for decades. Some of our favorite characters throughout history are directly linked to the hats they made famous. From Groucho Marx’s bowler hat to Heisenberg’s porkpie worn in “Breaking Bad,” hats have allowed individuals to further express themselves without ever having to say a word.

Ben Goorin inherited the family hat business from his father Alfred Goorin in 2005. When the now 47-year old Ben grabbed the reigns of the hat making company, his first goal was to change its direction. For some time, Goorin Bros. hat shop’s bread and butter had been wholesaling to both large companies and small boutique shops, but Ben Goorin’s first goal was to make the brand synonymous with the product itself. Against his father's reluctancy, Goorin opened the hatmaker's expanded opening retail shops, in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood and on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles.

 "It was really a way to survive," Goorin said. "It was taking matters into my own hands, and telling our story and educating people about hats. It was important to do it in a hat shop environment where there's nothing but hats."
