We are pleased to share the first photos from the October 26, 2011, HEARTH Act: The New Normal – Southern New Jersey Regional Continuums of Care Conference held in Blackwood, NJ.

Among the speakers were Diane Johnson of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Michelle Heritage of the Community Shelter Board in Columbus; HUD’s national model of a HEARTH driven structure for ending homelessness, and the Mercer Alliance to End Homelessness.

125 Attend Southern NJ CoC Conference

On October 26, 2011, more than one-hundred twenty-five people attended HEARTH Act: The New Normal - Southern New Jersey Regional Continuums of Care Conference held in Blackwood, NJ.

Among the speakers were Diane Johnson of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Michelle Heritage of the Community Shelter Board in Columbus; HUD’s national model of a HEARTH driven structure for ending homelessness, and the Mercer Alliance to End Homelessness.

Ms. Johnson spoke about HUD's commitment to ending homelessness and that she was ready to work with both Continuums of Care and local providers to make sure that happen.

Ms. Heritage spoke about the history of the Community Shelter Board and how they are ending homelessness. She also participated in two afternoon workshops on governance and structure.

Representing the Mercer Alliance were Herb Levine, Marygrace Billek and Frank Cirillo.

The Homeless Emergency Assistance and Rapid Transition to Housing (HEARTH) Act is the standard by which HUD will determine how much federal funding will be distributed to a given Homelessness Continuum of Care. Compliance to the guidelines outlined in the HEARTH Act is, in fact, the “New Normal”!

Coordination and collaboration among regional Continuums is strongly encouraged. And HUD has clearly defined the benchmarks by which a Continuum will be recognized as “high performing”.
