Hello! I have a question about coloring... so, i know how to make gifs and everything, they look good until sharpen but when i have to put color on them is where the hell begin lmao i never know how to properly use psd! do you have any tips? sometimes a psd doesn't help at all :/ thank you and i love your work!
Hey there :D
I sorted all my photoshop related questions, so you can find all my answers about colourings here. As for what I use the most, the answer is always curves.
Are you referring to using other people/downloadable psds? That’s always a bit tricky cause a colouring is usually tailored to a certain scene, so there’s always a few adjustments you need to make for it to fit your gif.
Personally I always start from scratch, but if you prefer psds, you just need to see what needs twerking and what doesn’t:
brightness/curves/levels almost ALWAYS need to be adjusted to fit a different scene;
check if your gif has a cool or a warm undertone and if your psd matches that. If not, mess with colour balance or photo filter to counter the yellowish or bluish finish.
the above should usually fix problems with skin tones, but in case it doesn’t, selective colour -> red is usually the way to go!
Tbh, I know this is probably kinda obvious, but the more you mess with the settings, the more you learn what works and what doesn’t. If you’re working with a psd, try to “deconstruct” it, as in, try to see what does what and why those moves work, and try to start from scratch yourself using those pointers you saw other people use. That’s one of the things I used to do when I started learning myself :D
