Note: thinking about our lawful good metal man freaking out about the trouble the x-kids can get into; egging houses, toilet papering lawns, jaywalking, being out past curfew, having too much candy, pranks gone too far, being generally disorderly. Bless his heart, love him! Happy reading, thanks for your support! Masterlist
Xavierâs School always went all-out for Halloween, and this year was no exception. The courtyard was filled with kids in every costume imaginable â superheroes, witches, a disturbingly realistic hot dog â all buzzing with sugar-fueled energy.
Piotr Rasputin, however, stood stiffly beside the schoolâs pickup truck, arms crossed, brow furrowed.
âYou⌠think this okay?â he asked.
You grinned, brushing a bit of paint off his cheek.
âI think itâs more than okay, itâs perfect.â
The bed of the truck was no ordinary trunk-or-treat display. Thanks to your boyfriendâs artistic abilities, he had transformed it into a miniature haunted house. The panels were painted with eerie graveyards, a crooked iron gate, and ghostly silhouettes that almost seemed to move in the glow of string lights. A fog machine curled mist over the cobwebs, while a carved jack-oâ-lantern grinned from the center.
Piotrâs usually serious face softened at your compliment. âWhen I was boy in Russia, I painted walls of barn with flowers for Illyana. Never thought I would⌠paint haunted house for trick-or-treat.â
You reached up, touching his jaw, turning his heard towards you.
âYouâre amazing, you know that? Everything looks fantastic, Piotr.â
His lips twitched into a smile, and he bent to press a kiss to your forehead. âOnly because I have good inspiration.â
You felt heat rush to your cheeks, he was so sweet.
You and Piotr got into costume and stood beside the truck, watching children run up to grab candy from the cauldron nestled inside. The trunk of treat was primarily for the littlest students - it was a good way to keep them all contained. The older kiddos were, of course, welcome, but you and colossus had gotten roped into taking them trick-or-treating this year. Again.
When the sun dipped lower, the real chaos began: a gaggle of students walked in front of you and Piotr, giggling and smiling.
Piotr hesitated, paint-stained fingers flexing at his sides. âMany children. Running in streets. Sugar. This is⌠dangerous.â
You laced your fingers with his, giving him a playful look. âRelax. You and me? Weâve got this.â
The answer, apparently, was sort of.
Halfway down the block, Cassie wrinkled her nose at a house handing out raisins and muttered, âWe should egg them.â
â¨Piotr froze, scandalized. âWhat did you say?â
â¨âRelax, Uncle Piotr,â AJ said quickly. âSheâs joking.â
â¨But Piotr crouched to eye level, his expression dead serious. âEggs are for omelets. Not for crime.â
You slipped your arm around his waist, leaning close. Although you agreed that the raisin house was lame- you didnât wanna encourage them. âTheyâre not going to do it, honey. Theyâre good kids.â
He huffed, still unconvinced, but let you tug him forward. The kids giggled at the two of you walking hand in hand, whispering about how âgross but cuteâ you were. You caught Piotrâs eye, and he flushed faintly, the corner of his mouth curling upward.
By the time the group returned to the mansion, the kidsâ pillowcases sagged with loot. They collapsed on the lawn, trading candies under the flicker of carved pumpkins.
Piotr sat nearby, pulling a small sketchbook from his jacket. You leaned against his shoulder, watching as he sketched the scene â the kids in costume, candy spread across the grass, jack-oâ-lanterns glowing behind them. His pencil strokes were quick but sure, capturing the warmth of the moment.
âYouâre drawing this?â you asked softly. âCute.â
He nodded, eyes still on the page. âSo they remember. Childhood should be⌠joyful. Safe.â His gaze shifted, soft and steady, to you. âLike how I remember you.â
Well that was just dang cheesy.
Your breath caught, and you brushed your lips against his cheek. âThatâs the sweetest thing anyoneâs ever said to me.â
He smiled, slipping an arm around you and tucking you close. âIs true.â He pressed a wrapped candy bar into your hand, as though it were a gift of gold. âFor my inspiration.â
It was your favorite candy- of course.
You laughed quietly, sliding your free hand over his.
âThank you.â
Piotr kissed the crown of your head, lingering there as the kidsâ laughter filled the autumn night.
Somewhere between the laughter of children and the sweetness of the chocolate, you realized that Piotrâs greatest masterpiece wasnât his painted trunk or treat backdrop or his drawings â it was the way he gave his whole heart to the people he loved.
