Hello everyone! Today I’m going to teach you a very important skill in the world of art, and that is COLORPICKING!
I’ve noticed that a lot of fan artists, especially for cartoon fandoms, don’t know how to make the colors on characters line up with canon, especially when it comes to skin tone. (Yes, I’m talking about white-washing. STOP DOING THAT SHIT.) So I’m gonna teach you how to take colors from screenshots of whatever cartoon you may be interested in, specifcally in the program Ibis Paint X, because it’s free, and versatile, and you can download it on your phone/iPad/ other device with no problems.
So when you first click onto Ibis Paint X and start a new canvas, the first thing you’re gonna wanna do to make your drawing accurate is grab a reference image.
Click on the layers option as circled in the photo above.
Then, when your layers pop up, click on the little camera to gain access to your photo roll.
here, you can click on any photo you want, and it will drop it onto the canvas for you. I’m picking a screenshot FROM THE SHOW because I want my drawing to be as accurate as possible, and not accidentally whitewash any of my characters.
Once your reference image is dropped onto the canvas, you can move it around as you please. Once you have it to a suitable spot, click the green arrow.
Now, in order to colorpick, click on the paintbrush option on the bottom sidebar. Lots of options will come up.
Click on the option that says “eyedropper”.
Now click on your photo, to wherever you would like to take the color from, as in my example with Anne being pissed at Sasha. Now you’ve colorpicked!! You can switch layers and still use the same color, and use the eye dropper tool again to grab another color if you like.
That’s it for my tutorial! Please don’t be afraid to use references when you’re drawing, and when you fuck up a characters skin tone, FIX IT. Don’t whitewash. Thank you.
