Sometimes I’ll talk about black issues and/or go to protests and I’ll get really self-conscious because while I’m very obviously black, I’m also pretty light skinned. and after years of teasing, racism, and colorism I can be very paranoid about my color and where I do or don’t fit. But then there are days where I watch an older white woman cross the street when she sees me or I realize that store staff are eyeing me or cops following me in a nice neighborhood and I remember that it doesn’t matter if my skin is caramel instead of chocolate because when it comes down to it society would still call me an n-word and demonize if a cop brutalized or killed me.Â
