freshmen college advice #10
CHECK YOUR EMAIL.
DO IT.
your email is so important, especially in college. you get notifications of events, important action items, reminders, everything on your email. always make sure to check your email at least a few times a day, or set up your computer so that it notifies you when you get one. people can miss important school events because they don’t check, or in one instance, lose their housing because they forgot to check and READ their email.
so start making it a habit now so that you’ll make sure to always be on top of it later.
Hi everyone! Sam and I help you guys all the time, so I’m hoping you can now help me! I need responses to a survey I made for my Quantitative Research Design class, an intensive psychology course. I’m doing a study on perceived attractiveness, and would love if you all could contribute to it! It is completely anonymous and shouldn’t take more than 6 or 7 minutes. However, you do need to be over 18 so I don’t need consent from your parents. Thank you so much for your help! I really appreciate it!

study tip #3
use the goddamn library. for some reason, people go to the libraries to study and stress, but not to actually use any of the books??? this has saved me so many times, especially when i don’t want to buy a book for my humanities courses. every single one of them was at the library, so i just rented it out for a few hours, did my readings, and brought it back, free of charge.
HOWEVER warning: i don’t know if it’s like this at other universities, but at usc you can only take out books for 4 hours at a time so make sure you allot those 4 hours as your study period. don’t take it out and then think you’ll use it later. my best advice would be to go to the library with your laptop and pens ready, sit down with the book, and jot down all your notes and write down major lines so that you can remember it in the future when you don’t have the book on you
freshmen college advice #9
okay im going to be real here. sometimes i see posts about college that give advice along the lines of: no one has their shit together, you’ll all be confused together!!! and while thats a nice sentiment, and can be true for you and most of the college population. its a bad image to give because:
its not true. if you’re at college, chances are theres going to be a wide range of academic peoples. so while there may be a lot of people who are just as confused and lost as you are, there are also going to be people who totally do have their shit together. i have friends who had internships right away, got a job, and got all the clubs they wanted as a freshmen. maybe they’re more together than most of the population, but these people exist so it won’t do you any favors to go into college thinking that you’re all in the same boat.
everyone comes from different backgrounds, goes into college with different privileges, and comes out of college with different expectations. what’s more important is to remember that your success shouldn’t be defined by someone one elses. instead of thinking about how everyone’s supposedly going to suffer together, i would focus more on what goals you hope to achieve, what are your own expectations, what you hope to get out of your first day, week, year, of college, and what steps you personally need to take to feel like you’re in a good place.
sure, everyone’s lost when they first start. but no one stays lost for long, so don’t get stuck in that!

first year college tip #6
if you don’t register for the dream schedule you want on your registration day, don’t panic! now public schools work differently than private schools just because of the sheer number of students in classes, so i can’t speak for schools like cal that have like 500 student lectures. but for a private school like usc,, you are offered a lot more flexibility to move around your schedule.
usc allows you to change your schedule up until 3 weeks into the semester. this is super nice because in the first 3 weeks, that means everyone is changing their schedule around too: dropping, finding better time slots, etc. aka the class you wanted but didn’t get? chances are someones going to drop in the first week and you can swoop in for that spot. you have to act fast though!
so don’t worry if you don’t get your schedule right away. wait until the semester/quarter starts, keep an eye on web reg, and swoop in on those dropped spots.
first year college tip #5
i’ve always had a pretty good relationship with my parents but theyre also the kind that hovered aggressively all through high school. moving 6 hours away meant that they wanted to know everything and anything that happened. for me, the easiest way to deal with this was by setting up a day (for me it’s sundays at noon) to video chat/talk with your family members all at one time. set aside an hour or two to catch them up and answer their questions. they’ll appreciate the consistency and you’ll only have to deal with their questions maybe two hours a week! it became something i looked forward to because they were genuinely excited to hear what i had to share and i was genuinely excited to share my experiences.
first year college tip #4
make spreadsheets and calendars for everything. spreadsheets are honestly a godsend and they keep you accountable. both help you stay super organized so you won’t feel lost after a month’s gone by and suddenly your entire wallet is empty. i have spreadsheets for expenses, food, places i want to go, future goals etc so like go crazy. no such thing as too many spreadsheets in college tbh
