MOVING TO COLLEGE
This process of packing up everything I own and moving someplace else was quite a feat even for a pro-organizer like myself. In addition to the college checklist I uploaded a while ago on here, there are several important things that I realized I would need after I got here that nobody tells you about.
1. A shower shelf - if you don't have a community bathroom, this is a great investment! The company who makes command hooks makes a white plastic shower shelf that stays on the wall of the shower in the corner with waterproof command strips. This way you don't have to tote around that soggy caddy all the time! A great investment. PS the suction cup version of this product does NOT work, so do NOT buy it. Yes, I tried it. No, it did not work...
2. COMMAND STRIPS & HOOKS - you will need a TON, more than you think! So just go ahead and buy a lot because you'll want them.
3. Bring lots of small storage containers like bins and baskets - very handy
4. A step stool - if you plan to loft your bed at all, you'll want this. Didn't realize how tall it would be even with just a chest of drawers under it. Instead of running to jump on, a stool or milk crate works a lot better
5. Mini school supplies - big school supplies or a lot of it will clutter your desk and storage space. You can buy more or borrow from a friend, so don't fret, go small
6. Only bring a few cute outfits - at most colleges, people don't dress cute to class AT ALL. Bring many tshirts and athletic shorts because that is the staple outfit in college. Stock up on your favorite comfy clothes
7. If you're doing dishes in the dorm, opt for a scrub brush combo - mine holds soap inside the handle, and you just press a button to dispense it when doing dishes. Another great purchase
8. Since you'll want to decorate your room, Shutterfly offers 100 free prints when you sign up for a free account, so take advantage and go crazy with pictures!
9. Bring extra hangers - you think because you brought all your clothes from home you'll have enough hangers - false. You will acquire many, many more shirts in college, so bring lots of extra hangers
10. If you can last a few days once you get to college without going to the store, do. The stores will be PACKED with other college kids. Not to mention the stores will be out of a lot of stuff that everyone needs.
11. When moving, wrap up fragile items like mugs and mirrors in cushy items like your comforter or pillowcases
12. Use stretchy gym headbands to hold your rolled (see my post about packing for more details) towels, rugs, sheets, etc. in place instead of a rubber band. You're taking them anyway, save space and conserve sources.
