Dicrostonyx is a genus of rodent in the family Cricetidae. It contains the 8 species of collared lemmings. They are the only North American rodents that turn completely white in winter.
Female lemmings have two or three litters of four to eight young in a year. The young are born in a nest in an underground burrow or concealed in vegetation.
It is active year-round, day and night. It makes runways through the surface vegetation and also digs underground burrows above the permafrost. It burrows under the snow in winter. Lemming populations go through a three- or four-year cycle of boom and bust. When their population peaks, lemmings disperse from overcrowded areas.

Color Changing Animals-Northern Collared Lemming
The northern collared lemming is a small North American lemming. It has a short chunky body covered with thick grey fur with a thin black stripe along its back and light grey underparts. It has small ears, short legs and a very short tail. It has a pale brown collar across its chest. In winter, its fur turns white (believed to be the only rodent to do so), and it has large digging claws on its front feet.
Arctic Blog's Animal of the Day: The Arctic Lemming
This little furry beast despite it's cuteness, sadly lives a dangerous old life in the Arctic. It is pretty much the main meal for most of the Arctic carnivores, such as the least weasel, Arctic wolf and foxes.
Lemmings eat mostly plants, grass, herbs etc. They have very sharp teeth to help them gnaw through roots, moss and soil.
They make tunnels or 'runways' under the snow to hide from predators.
