"Morro Bae - Kue Remix" por Collaj
Amelia Earhart (Never Come Down) might be Van Bobbi’s debut single, but some might find his creamy smooth cooing familiar to the ears. After all, the now Los Angeles based singer songwriter and producer used to release music under the names Collaj and 8th Grader when he resided right here in San Francisco. Now, he gives us a riveting brand of progressive soul and alt pop on his first track as Van Bobbi. We’ll always envision Amelia Earhart high up in the sky, bravely daring fate and breaking stereotypes, a legend that will “never come down” regardless of what mysterious end she may have met. Van Bobbi captures that resolute spirit on his production resplendent ode, a rhythmic drumming, key tinkling, synth clobbering burst of melodic lifting vivacity.
Van Bobbi - "Amelia Earhart (Never Come Down)"
Van Bobbi, f.k.a. Collaj, f.k.a. 8th Grader, a.k.a. I have so much talent I can have 3 different monikers and sounds is Jayson Martinovich, a singer/songwriter/producer who embodies his hometown of LA with an affinity for coffee, progressive style, a love of the arts and time spent in the void.
Van Bobbi’s first single is titled, “Amelia Earhart”, a clever play on the historic female pilot who disappeared in the late 1930s, doubles as a recounting of a former relationship: “Somewhere out there we never fell apart…Somewhere out there we never felt the pressure, somewhere out there we never closed the door…somewhere out there like Amelia Earhart”. But perhaps, with lyrics like, “We will never come down”, the song is about doing drugs.
Anyway, in typical Jayson fashion, we have tom-fills for days, a by-product of his musical influences from the ’70s and ’80s. Van Bobbi backs up his drum rhythm with a rocking bass line, a light piano in the distance and claps on the outro to give a more filling and more uplifting chorus as the song comes to a conclusion. With production and lyrical skill like this, I look forward to more of what Van Bobbi is and does.
