Colgate students attired in suits and ties drink Coca-Cola in the campus store, May 1949. The campus store moved from the basement of Stillman Hall to the basement of East Hall in the late 1930s. It provided students with necessities like ice cream, coffee, and cigarettes, and services such as button-sewing. It was a hub for card games -- and one of the only places on campus where the all-male student population could interact with women 😬 The store moved to the O'Connor Campus Center when it was opened in 1967. Wowza, Colgate once had its very own subcritical nuclear reactor stashed in the basement of Lathrop Hall. C. A. Dana Professor of Physics Emeritus, Charles Holbrow, led students in the Physics and Astronomy Club through its construction which included clad slugs of unenriched uranium and an 80 Ci Pu-Be (plutonium beryllium) neutron source loaned by the federal Atomic Energy Commission. Installed in the basement of Lathrop Hall in 1968, the reactor was moved to the attic of McGregory during construction of the link between the halls. Don you recognize this Colgate University building? Probably not, unless you were around before 1956. Eaton Hall, home of the Colgate Theological Seminary (which transferred to Rochester, N.Y. in 1928), was erected in 1886 and contained classrooms, dormitories, and a chapel. The original tower was taken down in 1906 due to unsafe construction. Happy birthday, Colgate! On March 5, 1819, the Baptist Education Society of the State of New York was granted a charter establishing its mission and purpose: to "educate pious young men." This is the organization (indeed, our 'founding fathers') which would become Colgate and this charter, held at the New York State Archives, is considered the University's founding document. Lancelot "Lant" Gilmartin, right, was Colgate University’s buildings and grounds supervisor for more than 50 years, from 1884 to 1936. While directing a crew of largely Irish immigrant kinfolk, Gilmartin played a major role in constructing and maintaining one of the most beautiful campuses in the nation. Among his many projects were the digging of Taylor Lake and the development of the Willow Path from 1903-1905.
