RO Character Background
Here is some more background info for the RO's this will be relevant both in romance and friendship paths.
Possibly more background to come, I just wanted to expand on what I already provided.
Coffee Shop Owner: Jodi G. Abernathy
Favorite Color- Pink Favorite Food- Homemade biscuits with Apple butter Height- 5'4
Most people call her Jo. You can almost always find her in the coffee shop side of her family's shop. They opened that portion when Jodi was in high school, and she started off as just a part-time employee. She always dreamed of going off to culinary school, but it was never in the cards for her.
Her older brother Michael was always sickly as a child. Much of her parents’ time was spent between keeping the shop running and taking Michael out to Memphis to go to St. Jude for his treatments. Jodi is incredibly close to her family.
She lives in the cottage on her parents’ land. It was initially her grandmother’s, but after she passed, it was left empty, and June had already moved out. Jodi went in and made it her own. Jodi’s home is full of color. As many shades of pink as she could manage. Jodi has two cats, Mallory and Mimi.
Jodi’s older sister, June, runs the ice cream parlor connected to the coffee shop.
Ever the dreamer, Jodi has made improvements to the coffee shop over the years, making it one of the more popular hang-out spots for the younger crowd. She even started live music Thursdays, where anyone is welcome to come and show off their talent from 4pm - 7pm.
Jodi can be described as hardworking and loyal. She values her community even if she feels like they don’t see her value sometimes. She knows Raven Hill can be more if they just tried and she isn’t ready to give up on them yet.
Adventurer: Joan/Jett Davis
Favorite Color- Red Favorite Food- French fries dipped in ranch Height- 5’6/5’8
No one really remembers when Joan/Jett came into town. They just remember an itty bitty little thing hanging around with a rough crowd. Having run away just before turning 18, Joan/Jett didn’t seek to make friends initially and stuck around the mines when the group they arrived with left Raven Hill without them. When found by Beth, Joan/Jett was brought to her home and helped to get a job with the local park.
When off work, Joan/Jett can be found exploring around the mines and going down unmarked paths in the forest. A thrill-seeker by nature, the town has learned to worry less about Joan/Jett because they always manage to find their way back. Still roommates with Beth to this day, they are as close as siblings.
Joan/Jett is seen as somewhat odd by the people of the town, though that might be because they aren’t from around town. They have a tendency to chain smoke and have become very big on recycling since moving in with Beth. You wouldn’t know it from the outside, but Joan/Jett is one of the kindest people in town you will meet, though you better not tell everyone. They don’t want people inviting them to church services and shit.
The Creative: Arturo J. Medina
Favorite Color- Rust
Favorite Food- Torta ahogada
Height- 5'6
Hailing from the Queen City, Arturo is used to everything being a lot more. More things to do, more people to see and far more opportunities. Wanting to figure out who he is without going too far from home he made his way to Raven Hill.
Arturo works in the local record shop while renting the small apartment above. He is an aspiring novelist and finds much of his inspiration in the mountains of North Carolina. He doesn't know many people but enjoys going by Jodi's every Thursday to enjoy the local talent and a sweet treat from June's ice cream.
The Cop: James A. Brooks Jr.
Favorite Color- Blue Favorite Food- Fried Catfish w/ coleslaw Height- 6’3
Better known around town as Jamie or Officer Brooks. Jamie’s family has been in the town nearly as long as it has been around. He aspires to be police chief, like his father was and his grandfather before him. His two brothers are both in the army. James is your typical small-town guy. He played baseball and football throughout school and married his high school sweetheart.
James never dreamed of leaving Raven Hill, always content with life as it was. North Carolina has always had his heart, and his small town means the world to him. It’s too bad that his small town doesn’t offer much to do outside of gossip. In his time off, one can find him down at Fool’s Gold shooting darts and having a few beers.
James is now divorced from Beth. When he accused her of cheating because she came to him with concerns over the mine voice, she called it quits. He has never believed the superstitions surrounding the mines and thinks that Beth grew tired of small-town life and wanted something more exciting. He has custody of their daughter Aubrey and got both the dogs in the divorce as well.
James is considered one of the best in the town. A good man through and through. If you ask Beth, he was a good man, but something changed in him, and she worries for her daughter. He is charming, strong, and driven.
The Park Ranger: Bethany A. Miller
Favorite Color- Plum Favorite Food- Peach Cobbler Height- 5’0
Everyone has always called her Beth since the day they brought her home. Bethany isn’t originally from Raven Hill. Adopted from Vietnam, Bethany has done her best to reconnect with her past, though with little success. Bethany has always had her heart set on taking care of the earth and spending time in nature.
She founded the high school science club with push back from several other clubs, and she still backs the club to this day. While Beth would have preferred to go to school and be an environmental scientist, she found herself pushing her dream aside when her mother was diagnosed with cancer during her senior year.
She received a degree in forestry from Haywood Community College in order to stay close to home and spend more time with her mother. After graduation, she married James and started working at Raven Hill State Park.
Beth is the only person to survive hearing the voice in the mines. She has been working with Joan/Jett to gather information on those who have gone missing or have been found dead around the mines in the last two decades. Some would say this obsession cost Beth her marriage. Others would say she is beating a dead horse and should own up to her affair. Beth would tell them all to politely fuck off. Her marriage was already falling apart with the drinking and how overly friendly Jamie was around town.
She does her best to be there for her daughter, but her former in-laws are close with the judge. She has tried several times to get the custody case moved but has been denied.
Beth is smarter than anyone will give her credit for. She can be headstrong and is incredibly independent. She isn’t going to wait around for something to come to her. Beth is going to make it happen, even if that means ruffling some feathers in the process.
The Roommate: Diana/Dustin Moore
Favorite Color: Dandelion Favorite Food: Crab cakes Height: 5’11/6’1
Your former college roommate and best friend. Maid of honor/Best man in your wedding, Diana/Dustin has always been there for you. Diana/Dustin is one of the most lively people you’ve ever met. Ready for the next adventure with camera in hand, you can see why they gave up their accounting job to pursue photography.
When they sent you the first postcard from Cold Mountain, you thought it was just a place your travel happy friend was stopping through, but then they bought a home. It didn’t stop the travel ,but it did become less frequent. Now doing nature photography workshops twice a month in Raven Hill, your friend has time for almost everything.
Between trails, nearby rivers, and efforts downtown, Diana/Dustin has become very well known in Raven Hill.
Diana/Dustin has become close with Jodi in trying to help set up a social district in the heart of Raven Hill. It is their hope to keep people from leaving and to draw in more mountain tourism during peak seasons in an effort to revitalize this dying town.
The PA: Mandy/Marcus Dawes
Favorite Color: Carmine Favorite Food: Chicken and Dumplings Height: 5'9/6'1
Growing up in the next town over has given Haywood County a soft spot in Mandy/Marcus’s heart. Watching the struggle for healthcare access in a rural community growing up led them down the path that they are on now. The choice of the PA program wasn’t an easy one, but for them it was the right one.
They love helping their community and have come to love Raven Hill as their home. Never truly interested in relationships because of other commitments, they find themselves happy with their life but craving companionship. They are hardworking, kind, and an amazing cook.
The Mine Voice: The Forgotten/The Lost
Favorite Color: Gold Favorite Food: Pheasant Height: 6’5
Two centuries he has waited, two centuries he has hated. Life has passed by, and his soul has been tied down. He calls, and he waits.
Something far older than he, far more clever waited and he fell for it's clever schemes... now they are one, but perhaps... he was someone once.
He was young and eager. He had prospects and a life ahead of him, but hubris was his downfall. He made a deal he couldn’t repay, and as such his life became tied to what was supposed to bring him his own fortune.
He has seen how the people have come and gone. How they have taken for granted all that is before and below them. How simplistic they all are. He could show them true greatness if he could be free, but everyone so far has proven to be too weak-willed to brave the depths to face what is within and deliver him unto the world.
