Look as I've headcanon'd it, his mother was a woman named Charlotte who saw the best in people despite everything and that's a decent portion of the reason he sees Charlie as anything more than a means to an end. Add onto the fact that he's a known momma's boy and we have Charlie's doting brat of a child she never asked for.
