Yesterday after dragging my ass and the kids to stroller strides to attempt to work out I went for coffee with a friend. She also has two boys so as you can imagine, it was less relaxing and more chatting between attempting to swig coffee and peel our kids off whatever piece of furniture they’d manage to climb up.

Anyhow, my mate had been told about a new place that’s opened, Undergrounds Coffeehouse at Bridgeport and that we should go and check it out. Actually it’s not totally new, it’s been lurking underground in a local church but they’ve headed above the surface to open up a new shop. I’m all for supporting new and local business rather than the big chain places so of course we headed there.

We parked up, unloaded the kids and all their paraphernalia and headed inside.

The place was beautifully decked out in creams and grays, wood and metal. Wonderful signage with a stylish yet approachable edge. A gorgeous cake display with little mini cupcakes and cookies. The boys of course pressed their grubby little fingers against the glass and picked out their favorites.

I ordered some coffee, hot water for a bottle and two delicious little cupcakes. As I tried to pay, the girl serving us explained that they weren’t actually open and that it was a private event. I was, of course, mortified, and tried to release the half eaten zucchini and chocolate muffin from my toddlers mouth and instantly regretted asking for cups of hot water. Never the less, the girls were so welcoming and told us all about what they stood for and gave us free coffee which of course, is a total win win for me.

This place isn’t your average coffee shop. Not only were the staff so friendly and welcoming to this rabble, who basically gatecrashed their private event, but they’re a coffee shop with heart.

Underground’s Coffeehouse is a not for profit enterprise which supports freeing individuals from human trafficking and modern day slavery. They’ve set themselves a target to raise a certain amount of money this year to help others and to help make the changes in the world that we all want to see.

They officially open this Thursday so go along, drink some coffee, soak up the gorgeous surroundings and bask in the knowledge that you’ve bought some coffee and done some good.
