In 2022, the Journal of Law, Medicine & Ethics published a report describing involuntary commitment in the country’s healthcare system as carceral (punitive, prison-like): “While masquerading as more humane and medicalized, such coercive modalities nevertheless further reinforce the systems, structures, practices, and policies of structural oppression and white supremacy.” outpatient treatment relies heavily upon psychotropic drugs.
