Interviewing Developers Remotely: Everything You Will Need
Technical recruitment was complicated enough without having to do it remotely.
However, as tech companies continue to embrace the idea of remote working, recruiters have to prepare themselves to adapt. Remote technical interviews are only going to become more mainstream in the coming months and years.
So what do you need to adapt to this change? How can you begin interviewing and evaluating developers remotely?
In this article, we’ll talk about three basic but extremely important things that you will need in order to develop, implement, and perfect a remote hiring process.
A Stable Internet Connection
This may seem like an obvious one. In fact, many of us take the availability of a reliable internet connection so much for granted that we find ourselves stumped when it stops working in the middle of a call or video conference.
Such situations aren’t just embarrassing, they also end up wasting a lot of your time and that of the candidate.
As a rule of thumb, make sure you are getting at least 2 MBPS download speed consistently. To test these, you can use a variety of free tools including Speedtest.net. Most of the speed testing tools online aren’t very accurate, but they get the job done. With a test, you will have a fair idea of whether or not your internet connection needs your attention before the interview begins. It is also a great idea to have a backup internet connection, just in case your main one decides to act up during the call.
It is also important to highlight the criticality of reliable internet to the candidates. Communicate to them that they will need an internet connection with a minimum of 2 MBPS speed in order to appear for the interview.
A Way To Evaluate Coding Ability
Whiteboard programming is a thing of the past. Today, recruiters have access to specialised coding assessment tools that allow them to evaluate candidates’ coding skills remotely.
A good talent assessment platform will allow you to test multiple skills, will be loaded with a large variety of interview questions, allow you to simulate real-world situations and problems, and do much more. It is also important to find a talent assessment platform that provides you with reports that you can use to make decisions.
The best coding assessment platforms also enable you to efficiently proctor coding assessments.
You will also need a reliable video conferencing software to interact with the candidates. Once again, the reliability of such a software is of paramount importance, especially if you care about the candidate’s experience of interviewing with your company.
These were just three basic needs that will soon be irreplaceable for technical recruiters in the coming weeks and months. Having said that, this list is, by no means, complete.
