For a game that takes the series timeline, lets a True Dragon turn it into her knitting project, and then takes scissors to it, 7th Dragon III is far too dedicated to the series lore.
Your character portrait is completely cosmetic. We don’t need an explanation for why the DLC characters are available, let alone one that locks actually using them behind completing a quest each with a really powerful boss.
Besides, we already have Mio the green-haired golden-eyed navigator. The ‘inexplicably identical descendants’ button is right there.
I think the funniest possible reason for VFD messing with the timeline in the way it did was the idea that Nodens wanted to avert her fate as the DS game's underwhelming bonus boss.
It's a pitiful enough fight that you can see why she'd want to avoid it.

(Spoiler related!) I feel like a horrible person, but I have a headcanon that the leader of my unit would accept turning into the 7th Dragon to get rid of the dragonsbane and dragon sickness for the 'good' of humanity. But I also wanted to have it so that he gets twisted from it, and repeats the restart of the universe multiple times just to see his friends again, but only for everything to happen all over again and he descends into madness? Idk it was just a random idea I had.
Wouldn’t the will of the 7th Dragon take over the leader though?
But let’s say somehow, the leader’s will to fix everything is so strong that he/she manages to keep their sanity and tries to prevent stuff from happening. I could only imagine it going bad- maybe butterfly effect comes into play and stuff like Ulania dying from a dragon attack or a team member gets into a bad accident happens- y’know stuff that didn’t happen in the previous timeline. They attempt to do a do-over over and over again only for something to go wrong every time (ala ReZero =w=.). And yeah, descend into madness.
In the end, your other members and everyone else learns that you’re the 7th Dragon and reluctantly fight you- well, after having told everyone the one behind everything anyway.
Finally, you get a bittersweet ending. Leader dies as the 7th Dragon of a parallel universe, and the current universe’s 7th Dragon is never born. All three timelines live together happily ever after. THE END.

It's not really a fanfic but I did make some headcanons and such about all my three teams and some facts about their daily lives~ (Like how the Agent character on 1st team stole a computer from the Development Room and tweaked it to be a Gaming PC instead, and how the Rune Knight Lucier girl from Atlantis became obsessed with Bloody Horror Films and Yakuza movies when she came to Tokyo, which it explains her crazy face~) I could submit those if it's okay.

For example: My Team Eden is composed of a grumpy apathetic Mage, a sadistic grumpier female Rune Knight, and a cheerful lucier Banisher who started dreaming of becoming an idol after visiting present day Tokyo.

I’ve planned to post my team’s profile from the start, but I wanna do their artwork first (which I hadn’t gotten around doing yet =w=)
But yeah, that’s the whole idea of this blog actually- to gather character profiles, headcanons and adventure/slice of life logs of players OvOb
