All right, I passed the USA Cycling coach exam (Level 3)! First, I have to admit that it wasn't as easy as I expected. If you assume that the exam will be easy (especially since you get a manual), you're in for a surprise. There are three reasons:  

1. The manual provided by USA Cycling upon test registration doesn't cover all of the testing material. To cover all the regulation information, you also have to go through the UCI and USA cycling rule books along with the WADA/USADA web sites. Of course, you don't have to memorize every single section (unless you want to), but should read through it all at least once to get a sense of them. 

2. If you're a person like me who graduated from high school a long time ago and hasn't had a chance to study biology, you might have a hard time answering some of the questions related to health issues, nutrition, sport science, etc. The manual covers many of the questions, and you should study the manual throughly and bookmark important facts in the text.  But a few questions caught me off guard because I didn't recall that information from the book.  So I consulted the appropriate section and found that, indeed, that specific information is not included.  Some further research on the web was required.  

3. No matter how ready you are, some of questions can still be tricky, especially the true or false questions. There are around 10-15 True/False questions. You have to be super cautious about every single word and take your time answering these. 

While I was studying for the test, I learned that passing the exam and officially becoming a certified coach doesn't mean that you all of a sudden are ready to coach people. Of course I have learned a ton, going through the study materials and regulations, and maybe I know more than your average cyclist by now. However, I really enjoyed the fact that the level 3 coaching exam was a great opportunity to broaden my knowledge of the sport and provided motivation to learn even more about cycling. We can all agree that there are countless things to learn in the cycling field, and in my opinion this process to become a certified coach can be a great way to learn more about the cycling world. 

If you are eager for a challenge and some extra motivation, I highly recommend the cycling coach exam. Who knows? Down the line, coaching might even become a full time job for some. 미국 사이클링 코치 자격증 시험에 합격 했습니다! 생각보다 쉽지 않더라구요. 연맹에서 주어지는 스터디 메뉴얼이 있다고 해서, 그것만 공부하면 되겠지라고 생각하면 곤란합니다. 

첫째로, 미국 사이클링 연맹에서 주어지는 메뉴얼(200페이지 정도)은 시험에 나오는 문제 전부를 다루기에는 한계가 있습니다. 각종 법규정과 관련된 문제를 풀기 위해서는 국제 반 도핑 기구와 미국 반 도핑 기구 웹사이트에서 관련된 정보를 읽어야 할 뿐만 아니라, 국제 사이클링 연맹과  미국 사이클링 연맹 규정집을 한 번 쯤은 읽어봐야 합니다. 물론 항목 하나하나를 다 외울 필요는 없지만, 적어도 어떤 내용이더라는 이해는 필요한 것 같습니다. 

둘째, 저처럼 고등학교 졸업한지 오래되고, 생물학 공부한지 오래된 분들은 각종 건강 관련 문제, 영양학 문제, 스포츠 과학 문제 등을 푸는데 상당히 애를 먹습니다. 메뉴얼이 문제의 상당부분을 다루고 있지만, 몇 몇의 문제들은 책에서 전혀 언급이 되지 않습니다. 온라인 상으로 따로 필요한 정보를 찾아서 볼 필요가 있습니다. 

셋째, 아무리 공부를 많이 해서 준비가 되었다 하더라도, 시험 문제가 아주 교모하게 틀리기 쉽게끔 만들어 놓았습니다. 특히 참이다 거짓이다로 답하는 문제는 시간을 가지고 한 단어 한 단어 유심히 주의를 가지고 볼 필요가 있습니다. 원래 이런 문제는 참 약해서 많이 틀렸습니다. 

시험 준비를 하면서 느낀 것은 코치 시험에 합격 한다고 해서 바로 누군가를 가르칠 준비가 되지는 않는다는 것입니다. 물론 공부하면서 많이 배우고, 보통 사람들 보다는 더 많은 지식을 가질 수는 있죠. 하지만, 이 시험의 참된 의미는 스포츠에 대한 지식을 넓히고, 사이클링에 대해서 더 배우고자 하는 동기를 부여하는 좋은 기회가 될 수 있다는 것입니다. 모두가 동의하듯이, 사이클링 입문하면 정말 배울 게 많습니다. 아마도 코치 시험은 사이클링 세계에 대해서 더 배울 수 있는 가장 좋은 기회가 아는가 생각합니다.
