Too confused as I got this present from my previous MSM colleague at J&J today as CNY present. Ain’t it supposed to be the other way around - where I’m the one supposed to give a gift to chinese friends celebrating this season? I kept thinking that maybe sharing gold balls might be good luck for them as well, so yeah - eat it up dear self @_@
Today was a difficult day - everyone from our common group was doing a CNY greeting and I can’t figure out how to do a good one. Truth be told, I really wanted to make sure that I am greeting properly as you are in that group - just for the sake of being a good friend who remembers important dates with your kind. I consulted my daughter dearest (after greeting her of course!) of what’s written in the chinese characters emoji that I have been sending out. Basically, it is used for CNY greeting but just wanted to make sure I was not using it for a wrong year or impression maybe. So upon confirmation, I sent it to our group chat and was laughing hard how one of our friend started to translate his previous greeting. I was waiting for you but your name never showed up in that group yet the tick marks were blue. Not that it matters but, Happy CNY crushie 🎉 - wherever or whoever you are with.
Repost @mccysg Happy Chinese New Year! 新年快乐 🥳 Couplets, or 春联(Chun Lian) in Mandarin, is a common custom when celebrating the Chinese New Year. Comprised of a pair of poetry lines, it expresses wishes and hopes for the new year. Despite being called a couplet, there is actually a third horizontal scroll pasted above the door, along with the two scrolls on both sides of the door. 花开富贵 (Hua Kai Fu Gui) is a common Chinese saying which means a blooming plant brings prosperity and happiness. As such, many people decorate their homes with plants to usher in the new year. The pussy willow is one of the most iconic Chinese New Year plants and it symbolises growth and the coming of spring. Its Chinese name, 银柳 (Yin Liu), also sounds like "money flowing in". Mandarin oranges 🍊 are considered a symbol of good fortune. When spoken in Cantonese, it sounds similar to the word “wealth” while the colour is said to symbolise gold, making it a very auspicious fruit. Exchanging mandarin oranges is a form of respect and a symbolic way of wishing someone wealth and prosperity, so don’t forget your oranges if you are visiting!
