The Social Organization Chp. 3-5
For this week we read Chapters 3-5 of “The Social Organization” and it highlighted a few key topics on how to go about becoming a social organization and how/when to implement a social media platform for the company.
In Chapter 3, the book stresses that it takes a real effort to initiate a social media strategy for a business. There are a lot of steps and explanations of the “vision” that have to go into creating a social media precedence. The book gave a lot of good pints but the main takeaways I got were to set guidelines for how to use social media, who the target audience is, and how it will help the core business.
In Chapter 4, the book details how to create an interactive, collaborative space with social media. My personal favorite thing in this chapter was the suitability chart for mass media. I think it gave a really clean breakdown of when to play to larger or smaller audiences, and what kind of content to do so with. More conservative approaches to media are best for things that only make sense to a smaller group or are only needed by the smaller group, whereas mass media can be used to grow the community you are in.
Chapter 5 wraps up the reading with the “No, Go, and Grow” stages for a social media campaign. It clearly lays out when to “go” “not go”, or to spend more resources on a project. A campaign that can grow by outside forces (Ex. by fans supporting a cause or employees distributing information probably does not need a social campaign. On the other hand, a successful campaign that continues to draw interest could be put into the “grow” stage of social media.
All together, I think the book does a really good job of showing the ways to evaluate a social media campaign before, during, and after starting one.
