The story of Cloud Architecture's first POP-UP studio project at Old Spitalfields Market for the London Festival of Architecture 2014. The film features the team of seven designers:
Derek Ouyang, USA Sinan Mihelčič, Slovenia Klemen Kušar, Slovenia Domen Stražar, Slovenia Janž Omerzu, Slovenia Karolina Ostrowska, Poland Alice Eamsherangkoon, Thailand
As well as Eric Graham, Market Manager, Colin Rosie, Market Trader, and the Skidmore, Owings & Merrill London office.
Over the span of four weeks, the Cloud team engaged the local community in research and design to understand how the market should develop over the next twenty years. The end result was a presentation of their proposal to the new owners, Ashkenazy Acquisition Corporation.
From the filmmaker, Derek: This was a challenging film to make because I needed to compress four weeks of research and design content into a fifteen minute window. I chose to structure it as an augmentation of a recording of a live presentation at the SOM London office, and divide it into roughly three sections: Intro, Research, Design. The end result doesn't go too deeply into the design itself so for more of that detail please see the complementary slideshow presentation at slideshare.net/cloudarchitecture/popup-studio-at-old-spitalfields-market-lfa-2014

This was by far our favorite proposal for the Grossmann Film Center: an educational film studio for the local high school and visiting students of film! We created a collage of ideas in this render including organic architecture, reflective surfaces, film props, and workshops. Over time this could grow into something like the Sundance Institute, where young fantasy and horror filmmakers could come to Ljutomer for a 2-3 week intensive workshop led by experts in the field and advance their own work. All the industry professionals we talked to were very supportive of such an idea, comparing the beautiful town of Ljutomer to an "artist's retreat." The local high school principal also expressed strong interest in developing this idea in concrete ways, and we hope to work with him on organizing a design & construction workshop next year to deliver this studio space. This photomontage conveys the ambience of our proposed WINE+CINEMA experience, bringing together the best of Ljutomer's wine region and film culture. Imagine being able to rent out a thematic fantasy or horror room to enjoy wine with your friends and loved ones while watching an artistic film! Render by Andraz Hrovat
As a conceptual proposal for development, our project did not actually consist of any architecture. What we did instead was a series of photomontages illustrating how traditional programmatic spaces could be infused with fantasy elements to create a one-of-a-kind Grossmann experience. This was the photomontage we created for a flexible gallery space that could feature film props, sets, or horror house creations. Render by Andraz Hrovat

On Friday July 18, we presented our proposal to the organizers of the Grossmann Fantastic Film & Wine Festival, along with the local high school principal. In addition to their participation we gathered insights and support from the mayor of Ljutomer, the tourism manager of local winery Jeruzalem Ormož, architect Marko Mitja Feguš, and filmmakers Julian Richards, Andrej Boka, and Milan Todorivič. The general response was that we convinced them of some serious potential for future development, and we will be collaborating with the festival and city throughout the next few months to try to make these ideas a reality. That makes two successful POP-UP projects in two months! Big thanks to skupina ŠTAJN and our team: Sinan, Maruša, Domen, Andraz, and Derek.
We are now at our second POP-UP project in Ljutomer, Slovenia. The event is the 10th Grossmann Fantastic Film and Wine Festival, where our team combining members of Cloud and skupina ŠTAJN are immersing ourselves in the festival and exploring the idea of a permanent HOUSE OF FANTASTIC FILM, which could provide amenities for festival attendees and the local community year-round. In the next few days (in addition to watching lots of great horror and fantastic films) we will be meeting with the municipality, festival organizers, film enthusiasts, wine enthusiasts, local schools, residents, and business owners to understand what they would like to see in a HOUSE OF FANTASTIC FILM. As we develop our ideas we will be sharing them here on this blog. One thing is for certain: we want to promote an idea that could really develop into a permanent structure for the city, and that means developing an investment strategy as well. Email us at [email protected] if you would like to get behind our project and help put Ljutomer on the architecture map.
