Because a very important dance was skipped, and I think we all deserve to see it happen.Â
Disclaimer. Yup.
Enjoy, my loves.
They never got a Rumba.
She knows that itâs nothing personal. Everyone in the final four missed one type of dance: Aly never learned Paso, Jacoby wasnât taught Samba, Kellie didnât get a Salsa. In the end, there just werenât enough weeks for everyone to get a chance at everything. And it makes sense that of all the dances Rumba was the one she specifically was not given. Being sixteen years old the sensuality and sex appeal is a little much for a Disney star, especially one under age with her parents watching. She gets that. But she still wishes she could have had that chance, because sheâd like the opportunity to explore passion in such a deep and personal way, especially with Val. Because heâs amazing and wonderful and beautiful and⌠kind of perfect.
Okay, so maybe she doesnât just want to explore the passion. Perhaps she wants the chance to really go to that level of fire with him. After ten weeks of searing glances and subtle touching back and forth, the rising tension between them is enough to take her breath away and she really wants to know what it feels like to pour everything out on the dance floor once and for all.Â
But that canât happen. Because sheâs sixteen and as attractive as Val is, she really doesnât think he can pull off an orange jumpsuit.
When theyâre exchanging final goodbyes at the New York airport after a whirlwind of press following the finale, he pulls her back one last time before she leaves.
âI promise you Z, someday, when time isnât working against us, weâll get our Rumba.â He says quietly.
âPromise on the bracelets?â Zendaya holds up her wrist where the bands rest against her skin, given to her to signify a lifelong bond between them.
âOn the bracelets and everything that we are.â He vows. âSomeday.â
âSomeday.â She repeats with a nod. Val kisses the bracelets and then pecks her forehead one final time before releasing her.
âGo conquer the world, my Zendayachka.â
Z smiles. âDonât forget me, okay?â
Val holds up his wrist where his own set of bracelets lay. âNever.â They quickly do their handshake one final time before she walks off to the terminal where her parents are waiting.
Someday. She can hold on to that for now.

It isnât like she expected. She hoped that it would be easy. That theyâd call and text all the time and even though theyâre on opposite ends of the country theyâd still be just as close as they were for those ten weeks. That maybe, just maybe, things wouldnât change too much.
She was wrong.
It was a little unrealistic to expect, of course, but sheâs always been a dreamer and it isnât something you can just turn off at whim. But yeah, things donât go the way she hoped. Over the past year and a half theyâve seen each other once, about six months after their goodbyes at the airport when he was able to stop by for a few hours one random weekend he was in LA. They donât called or text all the time and theyâre not just as close as they were for those ten weeks. They email once or twice a month, text every now and then or say hi on Twitter, but for the most part they arenât in close contact. Everything is busy and crazy and hectic and they both have their own lives to lead. They donât drift apart because they want to, far from it actually. Itâs just⌠life.
Dancing with the Stars was magical and one of the best experiences theyâve both ever been through, but nothing lasts forever. Itâs clear that they both have to move on. So Zendaya forces herself to forget about the lost dance and focuses on the future.
She never should have doubted him though. Because Valentin Chmerkovskiy is a lot of things, but a liar is not one of them. And he never goes back on his word.
It still shocks the crap out of her though when he shows up at her eighteenth birthday party in LA. Disney is throwing her the ultimate bash at some new restaurant and the place is filled to the brim with people. But low and behold after blowing out the candles on her five tier cake covered in neon icing Zendayaâs jaw drops to the ground when he emerges from the crowd. Her face lights up like a thousand stars as she lets out a shriek and jumps into his arms, clinging to him for dear life. Itâs a good thing he prepared himself for such a reaction or else theyâd both be on the floor right about now.
âWhat are you doing here?â she nearly screams, making him chuckle. âDid anybody know you were coming? Youâre staying right? How long are you here for?â
âCalm down, Zendayachka. Thatâs a lot of questions.â He lowers her back down onto the floor and follows her to an empty table while several caterers begin to cut up the cake. âA few people knew I was coming. Your parents gave me the information for the party.â He explains. âAnd yeah, Iâm sticking around for a while.â
âYou didnât come all the way here just for me, did you?â the bewilderment in her tone is clear and he scoffs.
âOf course. Itâs not every day you turn eighteen. This is a big deal. Iâm sorry I missed seventeen, by the way.â
Z frowns. âIâm sorry I missed twenty-eight and twenty-nine.â She hate hate hates that she missed two of his birthdays. Birthdays are huge and the fact that she couldnât be there for him twice breaks her heart.
âWeâve both been busy. Besides, those arenât a big deal. Just two more numbers to add to the list.â Val says carelessly. âAnyway, the main reason Iâm here is to give you this.â He pulls out a gold envelope from the inside pocket of his blazer and hands it to her.
âYou didnât have to get me anything.â Zendaya says, her eyebrows rising in surprise at the sudden gift. âSeriously, just you being here is more than I could have asked for.â
âActually, I kind of did.â He smirks and gestures to the envelope. âOpen it.â
She canât help but grin in return as she gives in and carefully slides her finger under the seal. Zendayaâs eyes grow wide as she pulls out the contents. Itâs a single white piece of cardstock with one word printed boldly in the center:
âNo,â she breaths, looking at him with tentative excitement in her eyes and refusing to fully react until having received a complete explanation.
âSo back in the day when our season was winding up I mentioned to the producers how upset you were about not getting the opportunity to learn Rumba.â He begins. âAnd long story short, they said you could come back when you were older. And since season eighteen started a few weeks ago and youâre officially legal now...â
âNo!â she cries in disbelief.
âYouâre performing on the results show next week.â He says with a grin.
âShut UP! No way!â Z squeals. âAre you kidding me right now?â
âIâm one hundred percent serious.â Val swears. âNow if only you had a partner to dance with⌠Hmm. Itâs very hard to book people these days, especially on such short notice. Maybe if you look someone up in the phone book? Or, hey, your dad could do it!â
Zendaya smacks his shoulder playfully. âVery funny. Because my dad knows so much about ballroom dancing and that isnât vomit inducing at all.â
âGreat! Iâll go get him right now-â he pretends to rise from the chair and laughs when she pulls him back down.
âSeriously though. This isnât a joke?â she repeats. âWe really get to go back and perform?â
âBetter than that, Iâve already cleared it with your parents and management team and got you the next few days off so we can rehearse.â Val grins. âI swore youâd get your Rumba, remember? I donât break my promises.â
âI know, itâs just⌠hard to believe. I mean, we havenât seen each other in so long and weâve both been so busy.â She murmurs.
âZ, do you have any idea how much Iâve been looking forward to this? Iâve been counting down the days until this day came.â Val lowers his voice. âIt was driving me crazy being around you when I knew I couldnât do anything. So I kept my distance and waited.â
âWait a minute, you mean-â
âIâm not saying I havenât been out with other women.â He says quietly, a hint of shame in his tone. âI wonât lie to you. But it was never anything serious and it wasnât often.â
âWell, we never said we couldnât- I mean, I went out a few times.â She admits. âWith Trevor and some others to see if there was something there. There wasnât though. I always found myself thinking about you.â
Val smiles. âMe too, Dayachka. I could never do anything more than kiss them goodnight because your face always popped into my mind.â
âI smacked a guy.â Zendaya confesses, making him laugh. âHe deserved it! We were at the movies with Bella and her boyfriend and he kept trying to put his hand on my thigh. After the third time of telling him to cut it out I hit him.â
âSeriously?â
She nods. âYeah, then I walked out in the middle of the movie and Bella had Tristan take us back to her house. We didnât even give him a ride home.â
âYou left him at the movie theater?â Val is nearly in stitches by now. âThatâs amazing.â
âSo this is really happening?â She has to check one last time because it feels too good to be true. Val nods.
âIt really is.â He assures her, and once again is nearly knocked backward when she hurls herself into his arms.
âBest birthday present ever!â she murmurs, making him smile.
âWho knew one dance could make a girl so happy?â
Z shrugs, still hugging him tight. âNot just the dance. Mostly you.â
He smiles. âMe, huh? Thatâs a pretty big compliment. Iâve never been somebodyâs birthday present before. Whatâd you ask for at Christmas? Brad Pitt?â
âIâve wanted you for a lot more than just my birthday. A lot longer too.â She says quietly as they pull apart.
Val stares at her for a minute. âWell you donât have to worry about that anymore.â He tells her finally. âIâm all yours.â
âPromise?â
He holds up his wrist, showing off the worn bracelets to her with pride.
âWhat do you think?â
Z grins, lifting her own arm and grinning. âIâve had so many people at photo shoots and stuff get mad because I refuse to take them off.â She confesses.
âIâve had the same problem.â He chuckles. âThey donât get why itâs a big deal. I always tell them that they donât have to understand, just respect that itâs personal and accept that theyâre not going anywhere.â
âEver.â
âEver.â He agrees. âUntil they fall to pieces and we have them glued to our skin permanently.â
âOr maybe we could just get tattoos one day.â She offers instead. Val nods.
âI wouldnât say no to that.â
âReally? Because I wasnât kidding.â
âNeither was I.â he tells her. âWe can look into it.â
âAwesome!â Z grins and watches as he gently takes her hand in his own, playing with her fingers. âSo, a minute ago you said something.â
âThatâs a habit of mine, saying something.â
âSo funny.â She rolls her eyes and he grins.
âWhatâd I say?â
âYou said you were mine. What exactly does that mean?â
Val shrugs. âWhat do you want it to mean?â
âWell⌠Iâm hoping it means those women you went out with were the last ones.â Zendaya says softly. âAnd that youâre sticking with one person from now on.â
âHmm. And is there one person in particular youâre hoping I stick with?â he questions with a smirk. âSomeone in this room maybe? Wearing a blue dress that shows off her amazing figure and eyes that you could get lost in?â
âPerhaps someone of that nature.â She nods. âThat sounds like your type.â
âThe only type I have is you.â Val says seriously. âI wasnât kidding earlier. Iâm yours and only yours, if youâll have me.â
Z smiles. âDid we just become an official We?â
âSeems like it.â he nods. âExcept that to make it official we have to seal the deal.â
âOh really? And how do we do that? The old handshake?â she teases.
âYou know, I think weâre past the handshake at this point.â He kisses her then, the first real kiss theyâve shared, right in the middle of her birthday party with a million people including her family and the press around and neither of them care one bit. And itâs perfect, of course, because heâs perfect and wonderful and charming and gorgeous and all hers finally. So the rest of the world can just back off for a minute because after waiting nearly two years for it to come, theyâre not letting anything in the world stop this moment.

It turns out that learning the Rumba isnât as easy as she thought. It takes a little while to get back into the swing of ballroom after nearly two years of no practice, her posture is crap again and she doesnât point her toes, but overall falling back into that frame of mind isnât too hard. The steps are new, but theyâre not crazy difficult and overall itâs not bad by any means.
Itâs just sort of hard to get a routine down when you continually stop to make out.
Theyâre not doing it on purpose though, they both fully understand how serious this. Because even though it is her birthday present itâs still going to be on live television and the network has pretty high expectations. But thereâs a lot of hip action and theyâre pressed up against each other for most of the dance, sending smoldering looks back and forth and holy hell is it warm in here?
âWe have to keep going.â Val murmurs, reluctantly breaking another kiss. Zendaya nods wistfully.
âYeah. Whatâs next?â
âOkay, so youâll go forward while I go back and itâs slow, slow, quick, quick, slow... and turn, roll under the arm, spin, slide. Now back to me and- oh fuck.â His mouth moulds perfectly against hers, their tongues sweeping together passionately.Â
âWeâre getting distracted again.â Zendaya mutters with a grin.
âWell if youâd stop doing that-â
âDoing what?â
âThat thing that distracts me. With your eyes and your face and your body- all of it.â he grins. âThis would be a lot easier if you just sat in the car.â
Z laughs. âI donât think Iâd learn the routine very well out there.â
âThatâs just it, you donât get to do the routine. You just have to sit there by yourself while I dance this alone.â He teases. âBecause otherwise I keep getting distracted.â
âYouâre crazy.â
âCrazy about you.â
âOh god! That was terrible!â she giggles. âOkay, back to the routine. We only have two days left to get it perfect. Whatâs after the second count of eight?â
âCrossover.â He instructs, snapping back into teacher mode. âThen back spot turn, extend and break. Remember on two you have to side step and then cross again.â
Zendaya follows his orders slowly, listening in part as he speaks while trying to go from muscle memory as much as possible. âAnd then back for the dip, right?â
âYeah.â Val wraps her in his arms and leans forward, bringing her body down to the ground. âYouâre too loose. Tighten up your form a little.â He says, refusing to raise them up until she does it correctly. âNot that much, find the medium. Now extend your arms and point your hands. Good.â
âEnjoying the view?â she canât help but chuckle when Val smirks from his spot directly in front of her chest.
âYou know it.â
Z fuses her lips to his again. âIâm really glad weâre finally getting to do this.â
He nods seriously. âMe too, baby. Me too.â

Itâs really sort of stupid that sheâs this nervous. After all, theyâve performed on the show together countless times and she knows sheâs a good dancer. Plus, itâs not even like theyâre competing anymore. They arenât being scored, thereâs no chance theyâll be sent home. Itâs just for fun. But sheâs about to dance the most passionate of dances in front of a live audience with cameras sending out the image to millions of people all over the world and oh yeah, her parents are in the audience. And itâs been almost two years since she was last here, so maybe the nerves are to be expected. More than anything else though she just wants to prove that sheâs still got the skill and this isnât just some pity performance she got as a favor. She wants everyone to see that sheâs not a little girl anymore and not only capable of performing such a mature type of dance, but that she completely knock it out of the park.
âYouâve got this.â Val says quietly just before they walk out on stage. âDonât even think about it, okay? Just focus on me and you and the music and the rest will fall in place. Got it?â
âGot it.â
âBy the way, in case I havenât said it enough, that dress looks incredible.â He murmurs. Z glances down at the deep purple gown. Sheâs sort of in love with the way the fitted bodice hugs her frame and the skirt that flows in just the right way when she moves.
âThanks.â she smiles when he leans in for a brief kiss, accepting his offered hand and a final peck before they walk out to the dance floor. Zendaya reluctantly lets go of his hand and takes her place across the way, looking off into the distance while theyâre introduced.
âAnd now, back in the ballroom and reunited after nearly two years since claiming the silver in season sixteen,â Brooke Burke begins, the sound of her and Tom Bergeronâs chipper voices bringing a warm sense of familiarity over Zâs mind.
âPerforming their long lost Rumba, please welcome Zendaya and her partner Val Chmerkovskiy!â
Out of the corner of her eye she notices Val give her a quick wink before slipping into the zone and lowering his gaze to the ground like they practiced when the music begins to play.
Heartbeats fast
Colors and promises
How to be brave
How can I love when Iâm afraid to fall
But watching you stand alone
All of my doubt suddenly goes away somehow
One step closer
Yeah yeah, so maybe the song is sort of cheesy. But they needed to pick something to dance to and itâs pretty, so why not? Thereâs no shame in liking Twilight and Christina Perry kicks ass with this song. The entire thing is so light and lovely and the lyrics tell such an amazing story- so what better to dance a Rumba to?
I have died everyday waiting for you
Darling donât be afraid I have loved you
For a thousand years
Iâll love you for a thousand more
Itâs perfect. As clichĂŠ as it sounds, twirling around the dance floor in his arms is magical. For a moment Zendaya forgets that sheâs on live television and that sheâs eighteen years old dancing something incredibly mature with a man ten years her senior- for just a few fleeting seconds nothing else exists. Itâs just her and him and the music in their own little world filled with wonder.
Time stands still
Beauty in all she is
I will be brave
I will not let anything take away
Whatâs standing in front of me
Every breath
Every hour has come to this
One step closer
Sheâs weightless. When he lifts her into the air she soars high above the clouds, imagining this must be how Wendy felt to fly with Peter Pan for the first time to Neverland. And even though sheâs been a Disney girl for quite some time now, nothing in her life has ever made her feel more like a fairy tale character than this. Just her and her prince, locked in each otherâs embrace as they dance the night away under the stars.
I have died everyday waiting for you
Darling donât be afraid I have loved you
For a thousand years
Iâll love you for a thousand more
And all along I believed that I would find you
Time has brought your heart to me
I have loved you for a thousand years
Iâll love you for a thousand more
Thereâs passion. So much passion. And not just the sexual kind, although thatâs present too. But mostly itâs a different kind of passion- something raw and untouched that starts at the very core of her being and works its way up through her soul, bursting out like pent up desire finally released after being captured for ages. Sheâs on top of the world.
One step closer
One step closer
I have died everyday waiting for you
Darling donât be afraid I have loved you
For a thousand years
Iâll love you for a thousand more
Itâs sort of funny what time can do. Suddenly it all makes sense. That passion and feelings stuff that she couldnât quite grasp at the tender age of sixteen? She gets it now. And there is no real description for it, they were right. It just is and itâs wonderful.
And all along I believed I would find you
Time has brought your heart to me
I have loved you for a thousand years
Iâll love you for a thousand more
For their final steps he tugs her back into his arms and she brings her hands to clutch his cheeks. Foreheads touch, noses brush together and in that moment the roaring applause from the crowd doesnât register in her mind. Looking into his eyes, as dumb as it sounds, in that moment Zendaya sees her future. And it isnât filled with world tours or awards or hit singles or red carpet events- itâs him. Just him.
âWell I think I can speak for everyone watching when I say that this dance was worth the wait.â Tom says loudly in order to be heard over the cheers from the crowd. And Zendaya canât help but grin, because heâs completely right.
